MILK SUPPLIES
CHRISTCHURCH COUNCIL PLAN. CHRISTCHURCH, May 25. Full control of the milk industry within the Christchurch zoning district is to be sought by the Christchurch City Council, with representation being allowed to the Suburban Local Bodies’ Association. This decision was made to-night by the Council. The Council adopted proposals providing for the following action:—■ (1) The licensing of the retail milk vendors.
(2) The compulsory tuberculin testing of all herds. (3) The closer inspection and more frequent testing of supplies; and (4) The fixation of prices for milk and cream by the Price Tribunal. Special legislation, enabling the establishment of a Christchurch Milk District, will be sought by the Council. The Council also will give further consideration to a proposal to ask the Government to re-enact wartime measures that were adopted for the city in J. 917. The proposals were brought forward by the Council's Milk Committee, which, with representatives of interested organisations, made an investigation of the city’s milk industry with a view to securing the best possible standard of supply. The Council also decided to recommend to the Department ot Agriculture the appointment of additional inspectors. Two of the Council’s inspectors are now on loan to the Department. An additional staff for the Government analyst to test milk samples is also to be requested. The compulsory tuberculin testing is to be accompanied by full compensation, by the Department of Agriculture, for any condemned animals. The Council has also urged the provision of facilities for the vendors to have milk 'samples analysed at a nominal cost.
