Mr H. Petrie arrived this morning, from Cheviot. Mrs F. B. Lawn left for Christchurch this morning. Dr. Thomas Vernon Griffiths, M.A., Mus.D., has been appointed to the Chair of Music of Canterbury University College. Dr. Griffiths succeeds Dr. J. C. Bradshaw, who retired in April' last year. Guests at Revingtons include: Mr H. J. Washer (Wellington), Mr J. H. Kiley, Mr C. J. Souness (Hawera), Mr 1. D. McKenzie, Mr D. V. White, Mr and Mrs AV. H. Nicholls, Mr W. Gourley, Mr G. Walters (Christchurch).. Mr. W. Brydon, manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Coy.. Christchurch, and Mr. G. W. McAvoy. of the head office of the company, Dunedin, left this morning, for Christchurch. The following are guests at the Albion Hotel; Miss Jarvis, Messrs V. Jones. C. Percy, (Christchurch), R. May (Kumara), J. Roy (Nelson). W. Bruce (Ahaura), W. B. Bromwell, H. G. C. Simmons, P. C. Sotherton (Wellington). Mrs. H. G. Wells (Dunedin). The death occurred at her residence Hari Hari. on Sunday night, of Mrs. Elizabeth Catherine Kidd, wife of Mr. Thomas Kidd, aged 58 years. Deceased. who was a member of Jhe Mulvaney family of South Westldnd, had been in failing health for some years.
The death occurred at Wellington, on Sunday, of Mrs. Mary McArtney, a former resident of Greymouth, aged 78 years. Deceased, who had resided in Wellington for the past 30 years, is survived by one son, Mervyn, and one daughter. Mrs. Lewis, both of Wellington. The late Mr. William Ryan, Superintendent of lhe Greymouth Fire Brigade, was a brother of deceased. Mr. W. Jackson, who has been accepted for service with the R.N.Z.A.F.. was farewelled by the Cobden Fire Brigade last evening, and presented with a money-belt, containing notes. The presentation was made by. Captain T. Gilmour, who eulogised Mr. Jackson's services to the Brigade during the past 15 years. Mr. Jackson was also met by fellow members of the West Coast Printers’ Union, and presented with an envelope of notes. The presentation was made by Mr. P. Coll. A London cablegram announced the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Jordan, aged ninety, mother qJ' the High Commissioner. She was the daughter of Captain Joseph Catt of Ramsgate. Her husband, Captain W. Jordan, who died in 1935, was for many years a member of the crew of a Ramsgate lifeboat, and later a member of the crew of a Margate lifeboat and surfboat which participated in many ship rescues off the dangerous Goodwin sands. Mrs. Jordan, who retained full lacultics to tlie end. is also survived by two daughters.
