DE GAULLE’S ESCAPE

LEAP ON MOVING PLANE. LONDON, March 1. Gen. Sir Edward Spears, liaison officer between the British and French Prime Ministers at the time of the French collapse, described at Carlisle Gen. de Gaulle's escape from France. The English ’plane in which Gen. Spears was returning to England was kept waiting at the Bordeaux aerodrome with the engine running. Meanwhile, to create an impression that he was remaining, Gen. de Gaulle motored round various Government offices making appointments for later in the day. “Gen. de Gaulle came to the aerodrome ostensibly to bid me farewell, but just as the ’plane was taking oft lie swung himself into the machine. We passed over La Pallice-

saw the liner Montcalm sinking, and the whole of Brittany with exploding British dumps."
