TERRORISM IN GREECE
CIVILIAN CONSCRIPTION
RUGBY, May 22. Squads of Carbineers are searching the homes of well-known citizens and politicians in Athens, presumably seeking evidence of contacts with the Allies. The fortunes of all Greek Army officers who left the country, have been confiscated, and their families exiled to remote parts of Greece. Italians threaten to send to concentration camps army officers, in violation of the terms of the capitulation, for fear they will join the Allies. Civilian conscription is under consideration because of the reluctance of Greeks to go to Germany, in spite of the alluring conditions offered. The Germans are removing metals, especially copper, from Greece. The food situation has slightly improved after the arrival of relief sent by the Allies, but the principal commodities are still scarce, and sold in the black market at fantastic prices. Guerrilla warfare has also recently flared up. NORWEGIAN DEATH SENTENCES _ RUGBY, May 22. The country home of the Bishop of Oslo, Doctor Berggrav, has been transformed into a private concentration camp. Dr. Berggrav was arrested by the Nazis on Easter Sunday, and is being confined at his home at Asker, completely surrounded by barbed wire. The estate is being continuously patrolled by guards. Of 23 Norwegians accused of having attempted to escape to Britain, 15 were executed by order of the Gestapo Court, two were sentenced to hard labour for life, four to hard labour for 15 years, and two to hard labour for 10 years. The German-controlled Norwegian Press says that ever;/ attempt to escape to Britain will be punished with the death sentence, because such attempt constitutes a threat against the security of the German Army of occupation in Norway.
