NEW MAYOR INDUCTED. [our OWN CORRESPONDENT. 1 ] HOKITIKA, April 27. At the meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr A. R. Elcock) presided over the following:—Crs. W. H. Stopforth, E. W. Heenan, S. G. Havill, C. Caliari, T. AV. Duff. G. Heinz. At the commencement of the meeting, with Mr T. W. Duff in the chair, the new Mayor was inducted into his office. The Council then congratulated him. An honorarium of £5O was approved. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mayor, Mr G. A. Perry, was moved, members standing as a mark of respect. It was resolved to send a letter to Mr John Fox, now of Christchurch, expressing appreciation of his- services as a councillor while in Hokitika.
It was agreed to meet the Hospital Board's request and credit the Board’s account with a refund of its water fees.
It was decided to prepare Camp and Tancred Streets for future tarsealing. The Treasurer’s statement showed receipts £793/1/1, expenditure £7lO 0/1. Accounts amounting to £1133 12/7 were passed for payment. Abattoir report: Stock slaughtered for the month of March amounted to 29 cows, 37 heifers, 49 bullocks, 277 sheep, 108 lambs,' 20 pigs, 1 calf. Condemned, nil. Fees collected for period amounted to£9B/10/11. Fees collected for corresponding period last year amounted to £B2/9/6. The Overseer’s, Sexton’s and Health Inspector’s reports were read and approved. The Council approved the 5 per cent, increase on wages of its staff. The Director of Kanieri-Hokitika Sawmills Ltd. applied to subdivide section 1223, Fitzherbert Street, town of Hokitika, into two equal parts, each containing an area of 20 perches with a frontage of 821 feet. —Approved. The Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch, forwarded an . analysis of sample of water taken from the Hokitika reservoir, and reporting that the water is quite satisfactory. Mrs Kathleen Coles, Gibson Quay, wrote asking that footpath between Livingstone Street and Jollie Street receive attention. —Referred to Works Committee.
Mrs E. King, Fitzherbert Street, applied for a tar-sealed crossing opposite her residence in Fitzherbert Street to extend from the bitumen highway to the kerb a distance of 15 feet by 9 feet and undertaking to pay the cost. —Referred to the Works Committee.
The Secretary of the Wiestland Hospital Board applied for refund of part of extraordinary water supply fees for the period 3/9/41 to 11/3/1942, this being the period during which the Board’s own pumping plant was out of order. C. E. Sparkes advised that owing to ill-health he will not be able to continue the sanitary contract after July 31. —A sub-committee was formed to report. F. Schroder, Brittan Street, applied for permission to instal a septic tank. —Granted, subject to the usual conditions.
A. Sumner, Sewell Street, applied for transfer of lease of reserve to H. HeppenstalL—Agreed.
