Back Again: Dark Hazard is to revert to the trotting gait again in the Washdyke Handicap next week.

Improved Manners: Ever England, now trained by C. C. McCarthy, is not likely to remain on the schooling list for long, as his barrier manners were faultless when he was tried out with Cymric, Battlevale and Beau Ciel at the five furlong barrier at Riccarton yesterday, before the stipendiary steward (Mr. C. F. Hartland). C. Fox, who rode Ever England, and the other riders, had the colours on. The horse did a preliminary walked round at the barrier, and after standing quietly, jumped out with the rest in fine style.

Bronze Eagle: Until recently trained by C. Tasker, Bronze Eagle has been given a change of trainers, and he is now under V. Alborn’s care. This Wrack horse won in his first outing early in the season, but he has since failed to advance in the handicaps. However, on a number of occasions he has performed excellently when beaten, and Alborn, who is enjoying a particularly successful season, should find him an easy horse to place to advantage.

Motukarara Riders: Riding engagements for the Banks Peninsula meeting include: J. W. Jennings: Jolly Time, Ryetown, Circular Note. Toa-iti; D. Cotton: Little Secret; W. Connor: Benevolent; W. F. Ellis: Prudent Prince, Whiphand, Dinah Dhu, Renardc; A. Messervy: Palfrey. Doria, Erambie, Scottish Dale; I. Walther: Dividend; B. Brodie: Northern King; C. Fox: Crossmaglen, Cymric, Atreus, Stormy Petrel, Roadsider; C. Stokes: Nightdress, Cheap Lodging, Full Pitch; C. Wilson: Wild Fox, Anchorage, Mauretania; Last Effort; A. Leach: Miss Saone.

AUSTRALIAN DIFFICULTY.

UNWIELDY FIELDS

SYDNEY, March 5

The Australian Jockey Club has to face awkward problems as a result of the compulsory pruning of racing fixtures and the elimination of customary holidays. There was an unprecedented rtish qI entries, and all records were beaten when entries closed for next Saturday’s Randwich meeting necessitating the weeding out of a proportion of horses by a process of balloting, so as to keep the programme within lhe limit of seven events, which the Club is required to do for the duration of the war. Nevertheless, the fields in the majority of events are still very large, and in three events there are 28 acceptors. The Club has also to amend its big Autumn programme because 'the Federal Government has deleted Easter Monday from its official holiday list. The Secretary jof the Club staled that it would be necessary to extend the date, probably by. a week, for receiving entries. He indicated that the principal races, the Sydney Cup, .Doncaster Handicap, Sires’ Produce Stakes, Champagne Stakes, and St. Leger would be retained whatever happened.
