Stout, S.M., Henry Joseph August Berthold., a clerk, appeared for sentence on seven charges of wilfully deceiving the Director oi National Service by removing ballot cards from the register. In all the cases a remand to February 24 was granted. Senior-Detective P. Doyle said two more cases would definitely come on next Tuesday. Mr. W. G. L. Mellish, counsel lor Berthold, applied for bail, which was refused. “I think he had better stay where he is,” said Mr. Stout. Mr. R. I. M. Sutherland, counsel lor J. L. Howard, opposed a remand in the case of his client. He said that Howard originally came before the Court charged with failing to report lor military service, and he pleaded guilty to the charges with which he was faced. He saw no reason why the imposition of sentence should be delayed. .. “I think there is a very good reason.” said the Magistrate. ‘‘This is a series of charges. • and I think they should all be cleaned up and dealt with together. I may he wrong, but that is my opinion." Counsel then referred to the length of time spent, in gaol by J. L. Howard. “Any time he has been in gaol will be taken into consideration when he is dealt with in these offences,'’ said the Magistrate. , . f Bai’ was renewed in the case oi Hubert Edward Howard and Francis Joseph Dwyer.
