FURTHER SUCCESSES CLAIMED -
GERMANS’ FIERCE RESISTANCE LONDON, February 16. Further successes for the Russian forces on the Leningrad and other fronts are reported in the latest Soviet communique, In the northern sector, the Russians report the destruction oi a number of blockhouses and the capture of a quantity oi material. Fifteen hundred Germans were killed. East of Smolensk .the Russians blew up a number of ammunition dumps and killed and captured some hundreds of German troops. The German radio admits that the Russians at some points have advanced 180 miles since their offensive In the Leningrad area, Soviet troops are breaking down fierce German resistance. A Russian cruiser has shelled an enemy-occupied village at the approaches to Leningrad. The Germans were taken completely by surprise. The cruiser pounded through the ice off shore with the aid of an icebreaker to make tne attack. ‘ “Russian forces in one sector of the central front destroyed six German infantry battalions,. while Russian cavalry in White Russia recaptured 40 positions,” says the Svenska Bladets” Moscow correspondent. ANOTHER U.S. LOAN. WASHINGTON, February 17. President Roosevelt informed .M. Stalin, in a recent communication, that tne United States had agreed to make another very large loan to the Soviet for the purchase of military equipment and munitions. The loan will not bear interest. It is reported that Russian and American officials are concerned about - *me irregular flow of equipment from this country to Russia, wnich flow is 50 per cent, below the figures that were agreed upon. It is understood that the Russians have been assured that materials will be shipped to them in increasing quantities. NAZI FOOD~PROGRAMME

As part of a gigantic food programme, the Germans have transfer - red 400,000 Russian farm workers from the Kiev and Jitomir regions to the former industrial areas ot Dnepropetrovsk, Nikolayev, and Knvoirog, from which the Russians evacuated most of their workers last Summer. The Germans are planning to resettle large sections of White Russia with farmers from Denmark, Holland, and other countries.
