FIRES IN FRANCE.

The Vichy radio reported that a big fire broke out among depots, warehouses, and shops in Marseilles. Another fire in a factory at Abbeville caused 2,000,000 francs’ worth of damage. USE FOR MAGINOT LINE LONDON, February 14. The Berlin radio announces that parts of the fortifications of the Maginot Line have been used in the past few months for strengthening the coastal defences on the Atlantic and the Channel, which are sufficient to defeat any enemy attempts at an invasion of the Continent. BRITISH DEFAULTERS (Rec. 9.45) ~LONDON, Feb. 15. The Foreign Office and the Treasury are considering the cases of British nationals living abroad, particularly in America, thus avoiding personal and financial obligations to the State, says the “Sunday Times.” Particular attention is being paid to those who left Britain at the outbreak of war, and did not return within six months, as promised. FOOD SHORTAGE IN EIRE. LONDON, February 14. Mr Twoomey, Secretary of the Eire Department of Agriculture, said that Eire’s shortage of cereal foods is so serious that it represents a grave menace to the life and health of the people. He said the prospects of import mg food were far from hopeful. KAI-SHEK’S TOUR.
LAHORE, Feb. 14.
Marshal Chiang Kai-shek arrived in Lahore to-day. He was received by the Governor and the Premier of the Punjab, and the Military Commander of Lahore. NEW DELHI, Feb. 14. Madame Chiang Kai-shek in an address to women, said that the Japanese captured Chinese children and used them for blood transfusions. They also sent boatloads of Chinese children to Japan, where they were trained for espionage. Chinese labourers employed by the Japanese received injections of opium and heroin as part payment.
