Revealing that the defences of Amboina are now in Japanese hands. Mr IT. V. Quispel, Indies naval spokesman, said that the losses of the Indies forces were unknown, but were probably heavy, although the defending forces were not large. The results of the Parliamentary by-elections clearly endorsed the Federal Government policy. The Minister of Justice, Mr. St. Laurent, easily defeated the isolationist anti-conscrip-tionist, Mr. Paul Bouchard, in East Quebec, while in Welland (Ontario), the Labour Minister, Mr. Mitchell, was elected against the Independent candidate, Mr. J. D. Watt, who was supported by Mr. Hepburn. The Cooperate Commonwealth Federation candidate, Mr. Noseworthy, was elected against the former Premier, Mr. Meighen, .in South York, also for the Government. The Liberal. Mr. Gaspart Fauteux, carried the by-election in Montreal. ONTARIO PREMIER'S COMMENT.

(Recd. 10.40 a.m.) CHATHAM (Ontario), Feb. 10. Mr Mitchell Hepburn. Premier of Ontario, commenting on the Parliamentary by-elections, the results of which favoured Mr Mackenzie King, said to-day: “I see that we cannot budge the Canadian people, unless we have a Pearl Harbour. . . . The Pacific war is astounding us. The proud United States fleet is in hiding, and we cannot send a battleship into the Pacific. Japan could muster 1.000,000 people in the East to attack North America. They are going somewhere, and it is either Australia or Canada. - ’
