Valantua: The Valkyrian gelding, Valantua, has been nominated for the Hornby Highweight Handicap, to be run at the C.J.C. meeting at Motukarara, on February 7.
Loncj Spell: Manrico, ohe of the greatest horses seen down the straight six furlongs at Flemington iii recent years, is to have a long spell, and it is possible that he will never race again. Ho has been troubled with recurring soreness for a long time.
As a Pacer?: Another handicap win lor Certissimus would put him on a mark' which would leave few opportunities for him among the trotters (says the “Timaru Herald”), and it would not be surprising to see him in two-mile open races before long. He has shown a good deal of ability with the straps on.
Jack Potts: The wins of Countless and Acuity at Washdyke raised Jack Potts’ score of wins to 50 for the season. To date, since August 1, the progeny of the American horse have collected over .£14,500 in stakes, 100 minor placing's having contributed materially to the total. Wrack, with 35 winners, is second with approximately £B5OO.
Dainty Step: The death occurred recently of the Lucullus mare Dainty Step, at the age of 27 years. She did her racing in the colours of Mr. W. M. Fenwick, of Feilding, now resident at Naenae, Lower Hutt, and until a. race accident compelled her to be retired she was a good winner. She won some £6OOO in stake-money,
and was succesl’ul in races of the importance of the C.J.C. Jockey Club Handicap. W.R.C. Pearce Handicap, Prince of Wales Handicap at Manawatu. the Riccarton Welter, etc. At the stud she produced Dainty Ways, Shona. Tripping, etc., and she is today being fittingly represented on the Turf by her grandsons Imperium. Poutatau. Dannevirke, etc., the lastnamed having done well in Australia. Her last foal, a four-year-old filly by Croupier, is now being broken in by Mr. Fenwick.
Fast Times: With the course in splendid order, fast times were registered at the Cambridge meeting last Saturday, placed horses in every race showing big improvements on their handicaps. In winning the Home Guard Handicap, Robie went 25 seconds faster than his assessment. He deserved the win, for he had not been out of a place in his six previous starts. Magic Task, who won the Brentwood Handicap. improved Wsecs, and like Robie, won so easily that she might, have gone even faster if pressed. The greatest improvements were recorded at two miles. Tanworthy, registering her first success, improved 18 .seconds in the Farmers’ Handicap, and for second in the Home Guard Handicap, two miles, went 21 3-ssecs faster than her 5.3 mark. As was the case with her stablemate. Exporter, who won two races at Claudelands recently. Tanworthy has made good progress since going into the care of L. McMahon. In both his successes, Bil Scot improved Issecs, but it was evident from the confident manner in which he was driven, that the margins could have been greater. Bill Scot gives the impression that, he will quickly reach good class.
