SEVERE COLD WIDESPREAD LONDON, January 22. Paralysing weather is gripping Russia and spreading over Europe. Towns between Moscow and Kuibyshev have experienced temperatures from 38 to 47 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. The cold has caused the closing of all schools in Sofia until February. The temperature there is 24 degrees below zero Fahrenheit.

A cold spell has gripped France in the last 48 hours, with temperatures of 15 degrees below zero at Vichy. The temperature at Dover throughout the day remained below freezing point, falling further at dusk. Sea water froze in pools as the tide ebbed.
