KEEPING CARS MOBILE

AUSTRALIAN PROPOSAL CANBERRA. January 17. The Federal Government has asked the States to submit their views on a reduction of motor registration fees as an encouragement to keep motor vehicles on the road for instant use in an emergency. It is unlikely that Federal action will be taken until these views have been considered. As petrol rationing is a Federal measure, the suggestion has been can-

vassed that the Commonwealth should reimburse the States for any loss of revenue suffered through reduced registration fees. A Government spokesman, expressing a view shared by influential members of Cabinet, said motor owners, particularly in towns along the eastern seaboard, who kept their cars registered and in use, although certainly paying heavily for the small mileage they were allowed, were to some exTent investing in a form of insurance which m io ht the salvation of their families in the event of an emer- ! gency.
