taxation*increase. CANBERRA, January 23. Heavier indirect taxation, new loans, and economy in spending by State Governments, will probably contribute towards the extra expenditure necessitated by the entry of Japan into the war. The approximate estimate is that war expenditure will exceed 250 million pounds, by the end of the financial year, instead of the 221 million provided for in the last Bud°6i. The Federal Cabinet is also expected to impose new indirect taxation, to raise another two million pounds, which is needed to increase the old age and invalid pensions from z3/6 to 25/- a week.
