A "WANTED” TANK

GEORGE MEDAL FOR SALVERS. When the former Cunard-Whitt: Star liner Georgic. 27.759 ions, was bombed near Suez in July there was on board a captured German lank which was being shipped to Britain for expert examination. Announcing awards of the George Medal recently to officers and men who helped to salve the tank, the War Office stated that importance was atached to the examination.

Lieutenant (.Acting Captain) D. E. Evans, Royal Tank Regiment, one ol the officers honoured, knew this, and insisted on climbing on board the ship when she was ablaze from stem to stern, and listing heavily. He located the tank and mad? a persona! atempt to remove the telescopic sights. Having failed in this, he returned to the shore and arranged for a renewed attempt next morning. He was joined by a party of Royal Engineers. At first light on July la the party made their way to the ship, and in spite of the heat, smoke, and flames managed to pass slings under the tank, which was lifted clear by a floating crane and taken safely ashore. For their pari, in the same operation the George Medal was alsc awarded the following officers and men of the Royal Engineers:—Captain (temp. Major) G. Rigby, Captain (temp. Major), C. R. Clark. Sergeant (Acting Warrant Officer. Class 2) J. Bradshaw. Corporal (acting Sergeant) J. E. Scrivener, and Corporal C. F. Williams.
