HOKITIKA NOTES

HOKITIKA, July 28. On Saturday evening, a civic reception was extended to the four men who have returned from overseas, Messrs R. Wallace, B. McCormack, J. Shivas and Mclntosh. A good attendance of the public ,at the Soldiers’ Hall gave the men a warm welcome. Speakers were the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), T. P., O’Neil (County Chairman), J. Bain (President of R.S.A.), and A. R. Elcock (Chairman of Hokitika Patriotic Committee. A presentation of an envelope of notes was made to each man by Mr Elcock. Mr A. H. Lawn presided at the piano. The returned men suitably responded. After the reception the men. were entetrained at a picture party and later at a dance held by the R.S.A. Ar/iong the visitors to Hokitika are Mi’ C. L .Brice (formerly stationmaster at Hokitika and now of Huntly) and Mrs Brice. Also, Mr R. Bulpin, for many years connected with Messrs Newman Bros. _ and N.Z.R. Road Services at Hbkitika, and now of Wellington. The Hokjtika Battalion of the Home Guard paraded yesterday afternoon under Commander Eastgate, with an attendance of over 200, jn. spite of the heavy rain. The Battalion marched past Brigadier Mead at the Hotel Westland and continued on to the Solydiers’ Hall. There the General inspected the men, afterwards congratulating them on their turn-out and giving them a short address.

Mr J. Linklater, of Palmerston North, is visiting Hokitika for the purpose of attending the wedding of his niece, Miss Nancy Linklater, of Waitaki, to Mi’ Gideon Anderson, jun., of Hokitika.
