| • Mr. Walter Raleigh, whose death has occurred at the Westland Hospital, was 86 years of age, and. came tb New Zealand from Australia. He was employed for many years on the Government water-race at Kumara.
The engagement is announced of Hannah, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Nimmo, Bright Street, Cobden, to Gordon, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. S. Peek, Byron Street, Greymouth.
The death has occurred at the Westland Hospital of Mr. Andrew Dunlop, 86 years of age, a native of Scotland. He was a farmer in the Mikonui district for many years, and resided in Hokitika before entering the Old People’s Home a year ago.
Mr and Mrs H. Turnbull, who will leave the Willowby district shortly for Dobson, where Mr Turnbull will take up the-position of head-teacher at the district school, were presented with a chiming clock from residents at a social last-, week.
Mr. B. P. Dillon, who will leave shortly for camp, was farewelled by boarders and friends at the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel, and was presented with a fountain pen. Mr. J. T. Leonard made the presentation, wishing Mr. Dillon every success.
The funeral of Mrs. Mary Ann Hopkins took place this afternoon, at Karoro Cemetery. The services, at the residence of deceased’s daughter, Mrs. W. McGrath, Kilgour Road, and at the graveside, were conducted by Rev. A. A. Bensley.
Guests at Revingtons include: Brigadier Mead. Lieutenant Edgar Stead (Christchurch); Mr Z. C. Talton, Mr A. L. Smith, Miss E. McKenzie (Wellington); Mr M. F. Franks, Mr L. Willis, Mr M. J. Bowman, Mr Trevor Hawkes, Mr W. Toomey, Mr S. F. Innes-Jones (Christchurch).
Mrs. J. H. Hall (Wellington) has received private advice from Geneva that her husband, Captain Hall, who took part in the Greek campaign and was posted missing, is a prisoner of war in Germany. Captain Hall left New Zealand as official war correspondent with the New Zealand forces.
Mr. Herbert Everett has been selected by the Auckland West executive of the National Party as candidate for the General Election. For the last two years he has been chief executive officer of the Allied Motor Traders’ Association in Auckland. In 1931 and 1935 he contested the Nelson seat as a Coalition candidate, against Mr. H. Atmore.
The death has occurred at Manurewa of Mrs. S. J. Montgomerie, who was born in Australia, and came to New Zealand when an infant. She was educated in Nelson and was married to the late John Ainslie Montgomerie, District Surveyor, in 1879, at Reefton. She is survived by two daughters, three sons, and four grandchildren.
The funeral of Captain Frederic William Cox took place this afternoon at Karoro Cemetery. The lengthy cortege included representatives of the Greymouth Harbour Board, shipping companies, West Coast Old Boys’ , Association and Masonic Lodge. The services, at the residence, Murray Street, and at the graveside, were conducted by Rev. A. D. Horwell.
Wing Commander H. B. Burrell, 0.8. E., officer commanding Hobsonville Air Base, has been transferred to Air Headquarters,. Wellington. Wing Commander E. T. Hewlett, D. 5.0., 0.8. E., commanding officer at Ohakea, will take charge at Hobson - ville. Squadron Leader M. F. Calder. chief flying instructor at Wigram, has been promoted to acting wing commander and appointed to take command at Ohakea.
The annual meeting of the Railway Officers’ Institute elected the following officers: President, J. S. Orr (Invercargill), Vice-Presidents, M. J. Forde and S. F. Clarke. General Treasurer, G. R. Wilson. Executive: A. Stead, F. A. Ellis, F. D. Trewern, W. E. Renai, J. S. Lynch, C. D. Abrahall, A. F. Gilmore and T. D. Lewis. Auditors: A. F. Taylor, and B. Tangney. Mr. Forde was re-elected as editor of the “Advocate.” —Press Assn.
The return of Mr Coates, member of the War Cabinet, after his trip to the United States on Government business, is expected this week, according to the Acting-Prime Minister (Mr Nash). He said last night that the other New Zealand Minister visiting the United States (Mr Langstone) would remain there until the arrival in America from England of the Prime Minister. Mr Fraser would probably fly the Atlantic at the conclusion of his visit to Great Britain.
