The War Office announced that Colonel A. Hood had been selected to succeed Lieutenant-General Sir Wililam Macarthur, Honorary Physician to the King, as Director of Army Medical Services when General Macarthur retires on August 1 next. —8.0.W.

The death occurred at the Westland Hospital, to-day, of Mr. James Alexander Hemera, a native of Orepuki, Southland. Deceased was a sawyer by occupation, and had resided for marly years on the West Coast, and latterly at Kumara. He is survived by his wife, two sons, James and .Thomas, and three daughters, all of Kumara. The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon at Karoro Cemetery.

Te Aroha citizens on Wednesday evening made presentations to the former Mayor (Mr. R. Coulter) and retiring councillors. To Mr. Coulter, Mayor for the past 20 years, an oak roll-top desk was presented; to the former Deputy-Mayor (Mr. G. Hedge), a grandfather chiming clock; to a former councillor (Mr. W. E. Smith), a mantel clock; and to Messrs. W. C. Kennedy and F. Firkin, both former councillors, goldmounted fountain pens.—P.A.

Dr. H. S. Ray, who will enter camp with the Medical Corps on August 1, was entertained at Revingtons Lounge yesterday afternoon by the members of the Greymouth LaWn Tennis Club, of which he was President, and representatives of the West Coast and Greymouth Tennis c Associations, there being an attendance of about 30. On behalf of the Club, Mr. W. Berry presented the guest with a Kodak camera and case, and on behalf of the Association and SubAssociation, Mr. A'. Winstahley made a presentation of a leather satchel and hold-all. Both referred to the excellent services which Dr. Ray had given to tennis in the district and extended best wishes for his safe and speedy return from military duties. Opportunity was also taken to congratulate Dr. Ray on his recent marriage. Other speakers, who added their good wishes, were Mrs. L. McGlashan, Messrs C. Stewart, E. Pattinson, A. L. McKay, G. Pratt and A. Warnes.
