“NOTES” FOR PIPE BAND

BOROUGH COUNCIT COLLECTION There was a novel sequel, at last evening’s meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council, to a reauest for a donation, made by the Greymouth Highland Pipe Band. Councillors generally paid tributes to the work of the Band, but the financial difficulties of the Council were stressed. Cr. F. F. Boustridge moved that £lO be granted (a similar sum was donated last year), and that the Band be congratulated' on its public services. The motion was seconded by Cr. J. Saunders. _ An amendment was moved by'cr. J. E. Kent, and seconded by Cr. C. Neville, that a donation of £2O be made. In reply to Cr. G. M. Truman, the Mayor (Mr F. A. Kitchingham) said that an annual grant of £6O was made to the Municipal Band, under an agreement entered into many yeai’S The . was defeated, those voting for it being Crs. Kent, Neville, and A. H. McKane. Cr. G. R. Harker moved, as a further amendment; that £l5 be donated. This was seconded by Cr. Neville, and supported by Crs. Kent and McKane, but was defeated oy six votes to four. The motion, that £lO be granted, was carried on the voices. Cr. McKane suggested that each member of the Council should personally give £l. thus providing the £lO required. He produced a £1 note, and offered to accept 1.0.U.’s in lieu of cash. . The Mayor said that the matter was optional, but Cr. McKane could act as collector. Councillors could please themselves. ' Cr. H. Herring gave notice of motion, “That the existing agreement with the Municipal Band be cancelled.”
