Nimmo, Taylorville, returned yesterday, from ‘picton. Mrs. M. E. Lewis, Marsden Road, will leave this evening, for Christchurch. A London cablegram stated that Mr. Geoffrey Dawson will retire from tne editorship of “The Times,” in September, and will be succeeded by Mr. Robert Barrington Ward. The wedding took place at St. Barnabas’s Church, Auckland, recently, of Mr. Donald Grant, formerly ot Camerons and Greymouth, and Miss Minola Burr, of San Francisco. Messrs F. F. Reid, S.M. (Chairman), G. M. Hall, W. Baxter (Secretary), and W. F. Tracy (Crown representative) of the Armed Forces Appeal Board, will leave this evening, for Christchurch. The funeral of Mr. Moss Bradshaw took place at Karoro Cemetery this morning, and was largely attended. Rev. Father O’Brien celebrated Requiem Mass, at St. Patrick’s Church, and Rev. Father Gregory, assisted by Rev. Father O’Brien conducted the service at tne graveside. The following are gUests at the Albion Hotel: Messrs. W. C. Hockley, B. Grant, H. W. Mclntosh, F. G. Henderson, J. Hardie, E. Cholerton, Tracy (Christchur.ch), Miss N. Clark (Hokitika), Mr. G. Allan, Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery (Wellington), Mr. S. Murphy (Nelson). Guests at Revingtons Hotel include Mr H. Orr (Palmerston North); Mr J. Simpson (Auckland); Mr C. E. McKellar, Mr S. Ashley Wade, Mr W. J. Syme (Christchurch); Mr E. A. Allaway (Wellington); Mi- J. Kilpatrick (Christchurch), Mr F. Newstead (Ngahere). Mr. J. Adamson, manager of the Owen Bridge mine (Westport Coal Company), Denniston, has been appointed manager of the Liverpool State mine. Mr. George Smith, formerly manager of the Wallsend mine, who was recently appointed manager at Liverpool, has been transferred to the position of local manager. Mr. Adamson received his training at the Liverpool mine.

Mr. Harry Hopkins, supervisor of the Lease Lend programme of American aid to Britain, arrived in London yesterday afternoon. Mr. Hopkins made the journey from America in a bomber, forming one of a fleet of bombers, all of which arrived safely. Immediately on arrival, Mr. Hopkins visited Mr. Churchill, and subsequently attended a meeting of the Cabinet. —8.0.W.

Corporal J. F. Scorgie and Privates C. Vincent, R. Grant, R. Martin, and W. Walker, who have returned from overseas were entertained at a social and dance at the Cobden Convent Hall last evening. Sister Baldock, who has joined an overseas unit of New, Zealand nurses was also entertained, and all the guests were presented with envelopes of notes, the presentation being made by Mr. A. H. MeKane.

An earlier statement that a member of the War Cabinet, Mr. Coates, who is visiting the United States- on a Government mission, was about to return to New Zealand very shortly was modified yesterday by the ActingPrime Minister (Mr. Nash). He said that Mr. Coates was expected to leave the United States by flying-boat towards the end of this 'month. Mr. Nash said that the Minister for Lands (Mr. Langstone), vVlio’is also in the United States, would remain there until the arrival of the Prime Minister.

Lieut.-Colonel S. D. Mason, N.Z. Temporary Staff, has been appointed Officer Commanding troops and Officer Commanding His Majesty’s New Zealand Transport by a Gazette notice last night.’ Lieut.-Colonel J. B. Davis, formerly of Queen Alexandra Mounted Rifles, is appointed Second-in-Command of His Majesty’s New Zealand Transport. Mr. P. C. Weenink is appointed Air Secretary in the absence of Mr. T. A. Barrow. Mr. Weenink will be a member of the Air Board while Mr. Barrow is away.— Press Assn.

The death occurred at his residence, Runanga, last evening, of Mr. George Purnell, a native of Wales, aged 76 years. Deceased came to New Zealand 60 years ago, and worked for some years in Westport, before coming to Runanga, where he had resided for the past 41 years. He retired about 10 years ago, and had been in ill health for several years. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Thomas and William, and one daughter. Mrs. G. Pinn, all of Runanga. The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon at Karoro Cemetery.
