RUNANGA NOTES

[OUP OWN CORRESPONDENT.] After two enforced postponements on account ol bad weather, the manoeuvres of the Runanga and Barrytown Home Guards were held yesterday at the Twelve Mile, on the Coast road. There was a good attendance by both companies, and the Runanga company of the Women’s War Auxiliary took part and provided refreshments. Lieut. E. Bastings and Sergeant W. Corcoran, instructors to the Runanga and Barrytown guards respectively, were umpires. The tactics consisted of an attack along a flat coastal strin by the Runanga company, Barrytown defending. Following the three hour campaign,, criticism on the work was given by the umpires. Apart from the mock battle, the day’s work involved a route march of about eight miles for everyone taking part. Lieut. Bastings, who has ..been in charge of training for the Runanga company since its establishment, is leaving the district, and the opportunity was taken yesterday to bid him farewell, complimentary addresses being given by Company .Commander W. O’Neill and others.
