UNTIED BOOTLACE

70 MEN LEAVE WORK SYDNEY, May 10. A dispute which is alleged to have arisen because a young employee refused to tie up his employer’s bootlace led to a complete stoppage of work at the factory of the Mascot Iron Foundry Pty. Ltd., yesterday. The managing director of the company, Mr. R. G. Macfarlane, was walking through the factory when his bootlace became undone. He tripped on it and ricked his back. He asked a young employee’s assistance to tie the bootlace, but it is alleged that the employee refused. The employee, it is stated, was told he could get his pay at the end of the day, but he said that he would leave the job immediately. About 70 employees then decided to walk off the job. They left furnaces, in which special metal was being treated, unattended, and this resulted in a considerable loss.

A union organiser visited the factory in an attempt to effect a settlement. The dismissed employee was promised reinstatment if he apologised, but he refused, and the men went home.
