TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME May 24—Foxton (at Levin). May 31, June 2—Napier Park. May 31, June 2, Wanganui (at AwaPuni). n . , May 31, June 2, 7—Dunedin. June 2,4, 7—Auckland. June 7 —Hawke’s Bay. June 14—Bay of Plenty. June 14—Hawke’s Bay. June 14—Greymouth. June 21-—Waipa. June 21—Ashburton County. June 21, 23— Manawatu. June 28—Dannevirke Hunt. June 28—Oamaru. New Trainer: The former hurdle horseman, J. Bromley, who was in charge of Beau Vite in Australia last Spring, has set up as a trainer at Trentham, and he has made a start wi’th Galteemore, who was-recently handed to him as a gift.

A Good Home: Palestrina, now 22 years, dam of The Cardinal, and also of Palustris and Privy Seal, winners in Australia, was included in yesterday’s catalogue at Orari, but was withdrawn from sale and is to remain on the Gladstone Park property.

Different Experience: Some men keep on paying high prices for yearlings without any luck. A Brisbane trainer, J. Gould, has had a different experience with bargain lots picked up at Sydney sales. Some Cure, bought for 20gns, won £6400; LinarL 32.’.gns, £2400, and Indian Faker, 30 gns,’ £l9BO. His latest piece of luck was in buying Gartilla for 80gns, who as a two-year-bld, has won £7OO.

N.Z. Interest: A colt of New Zealand interest sold at the Sydney sales was a brown by Talking from Frimsel, which realised 240gns. Frimsel, bred by the late Mr J. J. Corry, was a brilliant filly, and on one occasion dead-heated with that great horse Rogilla. The daughter of Grand Knight and Rachel, the latter the dam of Rabbi and others, was trained in Sydney by H. B. Lorigan, who now owns and trains The Monarch. Rachel, now 19 years old, is in foal this season to Battle Song.

Clarion Call Tested: The feature item of Tuesday morning’s operations at Awapuni was a grand exhibition of jumping over the new steeplechase country by the champion, Clarion Call, with A. Jenkins in the saddle. Beginning down the back stretch, his first two obstacles were brush fences; next was a 3ft board fence; then a brush at the bottom of the straight; the solid log wall; and finally the sod wall. He then repeated the performance with a bit more pace oh, winding up at the foot of the straight. He pulled up sound and was still all right after exercising on the oval. THE GREAT NORTHERNS. [special to “star.”] AUCKLAND, May 23. The announcement that Streamline is to tackle both the Great Northerns has created much interest in the Auckland province. Generally, he is believed to be more forward than when he appeared at the Waikato meeting a year ago, to fill the role of runner-up in the Waikato Hurdles, which race he won well this year. Although his ability over country has to be taken on trust, it is considered the Ellerslie fences will not be insuperable to him. Streamline is a big, powerful horse, and is well accredited as a stayer, being a halfbrother, by Day Comet, to Fast Passage and Waterline, two who were in the top class of Stonyhurstbred performers. Streamline has been rehandicapped 71b for the Hurdles and Gold Spot also has gone up 71b. The latter is expected to be a keen rival for all Northern aspirants. He and Master Appellant collided at the last obstacle in the Waikato Hurdles, but on the second day, Gold Spot scored in the Hamilton Hurdles by half a dozen lengths. He stays well, and is well seasoned, having won three times over the battens and twice on the flat this term. Tidewaiter and Black Musk are likely to be improved by their racing at Te Rapa and King Rey revealed there that he is by no means a spent light. If he has acquired confidence in his fencing, his class will have the rest in trouble in the G.N. Hurdles. Among the light-weight division, the most fancied are Esperance Bay and Selwyn. Many horses have dual engagements in the jumping double, but one who is concentrating on the Steeples is the rehandicapped Bridegroom, who gave a first-class performance in the Te Rapa Steeples. He now meets his runner-up, Dozie Boy, only 51b worse. These two should again be hard to head at Ellerslie. All Irish, who carried 10.12 to victory in the Steeples last year, has been raised to 12.4, which will make his task difficult.

LESS ENGLISH RACING. LONDON, March 7. The Government does not intend to stop racing. Mr Herbert Morrison, Home Secretary, answering questions in the House of Commons yesterday, said: “To stop racing altogether would be a very serious decision in relation to an industry of some importance. The Government felt that, while there had been reductions in racing, they should not pursue the policy which would mean the end of this industry.” The programme already arranged by the Jockey Club to the end of June, giving an average of three days’ racing a week, is not likely to be curtailed. When, however, a further list of fixtures is planned for the second part of the season, Celling races will not be included, places will be arranged only for horses on which the future of racing and breeding depend. In normal times between 4,000 and 5,000 horses arg. trained for racing. To-day the number is fewer than 2,000 and'by Midsummer it will have been reduced to 1,200.
