CENTENARIAN’S DEATH

MRS. MARY ANN JACOBS. The death occurred early this morning, at her residence, Newcastle Street, Cobden, of Mrs. Mary Ann Jacobs, aged 100 years, the oldest living pioneer of the Omoto district. Deceased, who attained her one hundredth birthday on February 18 last, had been in failing health for the past 12 months, but death occurred suddenly during sleep this morning.

She was born on the-Isle of Wight, on February 18, 1841. With her husband, the late William Jacobs] and four chil-1 dren, she sailed for Newj Zealand o n the Adamant, ] which arrived in Nelson after| a voyage of 93 I days. At Nelson, they] transferred to the Wallace

and landed at Greymouth in 1874. Mr. Jacobs took up land at Omoto, where deceased resided continuously for 62 years, before removing to Cobden, where she had since lived. She was the oldest member cf the Greymouth Methodist Church, with which she had been associated for the past 67 years. Her husband predeceased her 19 years ago, and of the family- of ten children, four, survive, Miss M. A. Jacobs (Cobden), George C. Jacobs (Rotomanu), Thomas Jacobs (Ikamatua), and Fred Jacobs (Greymouth). There are 29 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. The funeral will leave the residence, Cobden, at.2 p.m., on Sunday, for Karoro Cemetery.
