LEAGUE FOOTBALL
MANAGEMENT committee The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the West Coast Rugby League was held last evening, and 'was attended by Messrs P. Blanchiield junr., (President), L. Hunter. A. Kyle, J. Stokes, B. Ramsay. W. Megtes. J. Kidd, J. Griffen (Referees - delegate). M. Power (Junior Advisory Board) and P. Sweetman (Secretary). An application for readmission to the code was received from L. Pascoe (Kumara) and it was decided to forward it to the New Zealand Council, with a favourable recommendation.
Referring to the fact that the Ngahere-Runanga senior match was not played last Sunday Mr. Kidd (Fixtures Committee) said it was proposed to proceed with the fixtures as drawn and to leave the NgahereRunanga match over, to see whether it would have any bearing on the competition in the end. Mr. Kyle said it was a case of a team arriving on the ground half an hour late and he thought the referees should be instructed to enforce the rule to declare a game forfeited/under such conditions.
Mr. Griffen said the referees had always been instructed to include the time matches started on their report cards. . Mr. Kyle said he understood the referee had already left the ground when the Ngahere team arrived. Mr. Stokes: It was really a default and Runanga are entitled to the game but probably there were exceptional circumstances as far as Ngahere were concerned on Sunday. '[’he President: They might have been up against it to secure a team. The Secretary: Yes, they were. A lot of their players thought the matches were postponed and it took lime to collect them at Ngahere and again at Brunner. In reply to a question, Mr. Hunter said there had been no suggestion of Runanga claiming the game by default. Mi'. Kyle said he thought the referee would have been quite entitled to have given the game to Runanga. Mr. Griffen said he would not single out any one club. Marist had not arrived at Ngahere until about three o’clock, Mr. Stokes said they could not have the teams arriving at any time. They had to study the public to a certain extent. He moved that all clubs be informed that, in the future, the quarter-hour limit for late arrivals would be enforced. Mr. Griffen: Is that a direction to the referees to declare the other team the winners after a quarter of an hour? Members expressed the opinion that it was a matter that could be left to the discretion of referees and the motion was carried.
REPRESENTATIVE MATCH On the suggestion to the President, it was decided to communicate with the Inangahua League, offering to send a senior representative team to Reelton on June 2, if the mines were not working on that day, or, in event of the holiday not being observed for the King’s Birthday, on June 1, the match to be for the Mazetti Cup. Messrs J. Dodds, A. Beban junr., L. Hunter and J. Griffen were nominated by the clubs as senior selectors. Messrs Hunter and Griffen declined office and Messrs Dodds and Beban were appointed selectors, with
t Mr. Stokes as independent chairman. The following nominations were received for the three junior selectors: Messrs N. Sorenson, B. Ramsay, W. Kells, A. Winstanley, W. Moore, R ’ Milne and F. Bernard. Messrs Ramsay and Moore declined office and on a ballot being taken Messrs Sorenson (Greymouth), Winstanley (Runanga) and Milne (Kumara) were appointed selectors. Mr. Power reported that the Junior Advisory Board had appointed Rev. Brother William, Mr. W. Moore (Greymouth) and Mr. Mason (Blackball)' as schoolboy selectors. Mr. Stokes said he would like to congratulate the President, on behalf of the League, on being elected to the Greymouth Borough Council and Power Board. It was nice to know, he said, that Mr. Blanchfield was held in such high esteem in Greymouth and it showed that the people appreciated his administration of the League, and had confidence in his ability. In returning thanks for Mr. Stokes remarks, the President said he believed that his election was not due to any merit of his, but to the good support of his friends. He could only reiterate the slogan of the election, that he would not let the voters down.
