Mr and Mrs O. Thomas returned yesterday, from the North Island. Mr J. Knowles returned yesterday, from Wellington. Rev. Father D. Moore, S.M., arrived yesterday, from Hastings. Mr and Mrs D. Bagot returned yesterday, from Christchurch. Mr and Mrs J. McKenzie, Cowper Street, returned yesterday, from Christchurch. Mrs. Pike, Cobden has received cabled advice that her sons Private A. and M. Pike who were with the New Zealand forces in Greece, are safe and well, A London cablegram stated that Mr. Leathers, who was recently appointed Minister of Transport and Supply, has assumed the title of Baron Leathers of Purfleet. The King has approved the appointment of Vice-Admiral W. J. Whitworth to be a Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty and Chief of Naval Personnel, in succession to Admiral Sir Charles Little--Official Wireless. Guests at Revingtons include: —Mr. C. Jacobi, Mr. J. The King has approved the appointment of Mr. T. M. Snow to be His Majesty’s Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Bogota, in succession to Mr. B. T. Paske Smith, who has been obliged by ill-health to relinquish the post. —Official Wireless.
The Dunedin Metropolitan Fire Board last night appointed its deputysuperintendent, Mr. F. C. Laidlaw, to the position of brigade superintendent, made vacant by the death of the superintendent, Mr. R. H. Price. There were 15 applicants for the position.—Press Assn.
The death occurred at Greymouth to-day, after an illness of 12 months, of Mrs. Evelyn Maud Collins, aged 67 years, a native of Launceston, Tasmania. Deceased had resided in Runanga for 35 years. Her husband, John Collins, died two years ago. There are no relations in New Zealand. The funeral will take place on Friday.
A cablegram from Noumea stated that Messrs Langstone and Coates arrived, but, at the express desire of the visitors, no official reception was given. Messrs Langstone and Coates were cordially greeted by M. Brunot and M. Sautot, and were later entertained at dinner at Government House.
Mr. L. O’Malley, stationmaster at Ikamatua, left yesterday on transfer to Woolston, in a similar capacity. He was farewelled by the members of the Ikamatua Golf and Tennis Clubs and presented with a mantle clock. The presentation was made by Mr. W. Craven Mirfln, patron of the Golf Club, who referred to the various services given by the recipient and expressed good wishes for his future.
The King has approved the appointment of Major-General (temporary Lieutenant-General) Sir William Dobbie, as Governor and Commander-in-Chief at Malta. Major-General Dobbie has been administering the government of Malta since he assumed command of the troops in April, 1940, with the exception of a short period in May, 1940, immediately before General Sir Charles Bonham Carter left the colony.—Official Wireless.
The death occurred last evening, following an illness of six weeks, of Mr Thomas Hynes, of Nelson Creek. Deceased was a native of Nelson Creek, aged 44 years, and for a number of years had been an employee of the Grey County Council. He was formerly a well-known Rugby League player, as a member of Nelson Creek teams. He is survived by three sisters, Mesdames E. Hill and T. Burr (Nelson Creek) and A. Madden (Christchurch) and three brothers, Patrick (Ahaura), John and James (Nelson Creek). The funeral will take place to-morrow, at the Ahaura Cemetery.
The coming-of-age of Miss Nance McKane. daughter of Mr and Mrs A. H. McKane, of Cobden, and the Air Force Queen in the Grey District Patriotic Carnival, was celebrated at a ball in Schaef’s Hall, last evening. The customary key was presented to the guest by the Mayor (Mr F. A. Kitchingham), who congratulated her upon attaining her majority and expressed good wishes for her future health and happiness. She was also the recipient of a gold brooch-key from the Air Force Committee, the presentation being made by Mr A. Hill. The air hostesses and others present at the ball accorded musical honours to Miss McKane.
