HOKITIKA NOTES

[our own correspondent.] I HOKITIKA, May 20. _ The monthly meeting of the Hokitika R.S.A. was held last evening; ! present: Messrs. J. S. Bain (vice--president), R. Paterson, G. C. Wilson, W. M. Fraser, J. N. Robinson, G. A. King, P. R. Whitford, C. Hart, H. Wells, W. Eastgate, C. H. Harrison, and H. W. G. Park. Mr. Wilson reported on the number of visits paid to the ex-soldier patients in hospital, and the usual tobacco and fruit was issued. Messrs. King and Whitford were appointed visitors for the ensuing month. The Westland Patriotic Committee advised that the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band will visit Hokitika on Monday, the 26th., and asking the R.S.A. to assist with accommodation and entertainment of the men. The chairman and secretary will attend the meeting. The Hokitika Patriotic Committee requested the co-operation of the Hokitika R.S.A. in regard to the formation of a welfare organisation regarding the wives and dependents of soldiers overseas.—lt was decided to offer the fullest co-operation.

The transfer of Mr. C. B. Aitken was received from the Palmerston North Returned Soldiers Association.

The national membership of the R.S.A. was reported as at 38,167, the number of Associations being 93. This figure represents an increase of 17.7 per cent, on last year’s figures. Hokitika was shown on the membership ladder as 34th with a membership of 264.

Accounts amounting to £4l/3/8 were passed for payment. It was decided to grant the use of the Hall to the Red Cross, for the purpose of conducting classes in first aid and home nursing. A similar request from the Women’s War Auxiliary for lectures was also granted. The secretary was instructed to procure a flag—the N.Z. Ensign—to be flown over the Soldiers’ Hall on special occasions.
