TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping meetings to come. March I—Franklin.1 —Franklin. March I—Rangitikei. March I—Banks Peninsula. Marell'7, B—Cromwell. March B—Clifden.8 —Clifden. March B—Carterton. March 6, 10—Taranaki. March 13, 15—Wellington. March 15; 17—Ohinemuri. March 20, March 22, 24—Bay of Plenty. March 22, 24—Oamaru. March 27, 29—Hawke’s Bay.

Has Improved: Kotua has definitely improved and she gave none of her opponents a chance at Woodville. Admittedly the class was not strong, but she earned nine stone and won very easily. Kotua has taken time, but she should go on improving and she sticks on well.

Coming Back: Dainty Sue is very well again. She raced unluckily at Waikato and again at Woodville, where she should have won the Cup. A good stake is due to come h'dr way if she retains her present form. Dainty Sue is m the Rangitikei Cup to-morrow.

Motorist Fined: A new way to lose money on a racecourse has been discovered. A rnotorist who ignored the instructions of the parking attendant at Woodville on Saturday, and persisted in park- • ing where he pleased, was taken be- • fpre the stewards and fined £l.

Left at Barrier: Golden Bonnet, favourite for the Shaftesbury Handicap at Te Aroha, blayed up at the barrier and the starter sent the rest of the field away without her. A similar course was adopted with a bad actor at Winton recently. Starters are rather shy about discarding unruly horses, but theie are many cases in which, in justice to the fdst of the field, less regard should be paid to them.

Ran Well: Daljarrock was responsible for two good races at Woodville, He carried 101 b overweight each day to secure the services of a strong horseman, but such policy is justified with a green youngster. Daljarrock is a good galloper and looks a solid type sure to improve. He is by Theio from Gay Lass, by Lord Quex, and descends through Maude and the Musket mare, Hilda, a colonial family with a good record.

Good Performance:

One of the best performances among the hacks at Woodville was that of Goldcraft. She shows signs of exceptional stamina and finishes with a long-sustained run. Goldcraft is a four-year-old mare by Defoe from Golden Streak, who is a younger full sister to that good, hardy horse Silver Streak. They are both by Paper Money from Fulica, by Braxted-Bolt Coot, by Fowlingpiece.

Riding at Motukarara: Riding engagements made for tomorrow at Motukarara include. L. J. Ellis, Don’t Forget, Rawhamai; C Wilson, Willow Wood, Winning Rival, Wild Fox, Ryetown; C. Fox, Cymric, The Wrecker, Lindus; W. F Ellis, My Abbey, Synthetic, Knight Commander; A. E. Ellis, Wardress, Princess Minerva; S. Green, Palo Alto, Lady Derby; M. Billington, Not Out, Bascule; L. Hare, Iceland Spar B Brodie, Bright Lad; J. Jennings, Ann Mie, Halt; A. Messervy, King’s Toast, Eramble, Doria, Alias.

Appeals Dismissed: The appeals of Mr W. S. Goosman Owner of Laughing Fox, and G Cameron, jockey, concerning actions taken by the Rotorua Racing Club following the running of the Waimangu Stakes on the first day of the recent meeting at Arawa Park, were dimissed by the Auckland Disti ict Committee. Laughing Fox won the race from Natal, but finding that there had been interference with Natal, the judicial committee of the club awarded Natal first place and Laughing Fox second place. Cameron the rider of Laughing Fox, was subsequently suspended for one month. The deposits lodged with the appeals in each case were ordered to be returned.

Trotting

MEETINGS TO COME. March 1.— Invercargill. March 8. —Thames. March B.—Timaru. March 15.—Wyndham. March 15.—Cheviot. March 22.—Westland (at Greymouth) March 27, 29.—Wellington. March 29— Cambridge. - Division Race: With 27 of the 28 acceptors for the Wairewa Trot Handicap assessed on the limit, the Banks Peninsula Racing Club will probably find it necessary to run this race in two divisions, the safety number for a mile and a .quarter on this course being set down at 23 starters from the one line.

Fervent: , Fervent, who claims an engagement among the maiden pacers in the Trial Handicap at the Invercargill Trotting Club’s meeting, is a three-year-old by Quite Sure from Logan s Mission, the dam of Grand Mogul, Smile Again, and Aspirant. To date, Fervent has started twice, finishing second on each occasion. In both races she showed extreme speed and she is regarded as one of the most brilliant pacers of her age to race this season.

Likely Improver: Pleasant Guy won her last two outings at' the close of last season’s racing, and she was successful in her first appearance this term. Since then,- however, she has failed to come up to expectations. This mare, who is trained by R. Townley at Tinwald, has the ability to go a long way in the handicaps, and it is possible that she will make an early return to her best form. She is engaged at Invercargill to-morrow.
