Ran Out: When Heidelberg won the Winton Cup he ran himself out of hack class, and won so well that it looks as if he will be able to hold his own in open company. He is not engaged at Wingatui on Thursday. Riders for Hokitika: There will probably be a scarcity of horsemen for the first day of the Hokitika meeting on Saturday, owing to the Dunedin attraction, and the fact that several horsemen are in camp, but Riccarton jockeys riding at Wingatui on Saturday will be at Hokitika on Monday.
Tough: Skyrena is a hardy mare, as she made her 75th appearance in two and a half years when she raced at Gore. She had been- in the money on 40 occasions. Many of her outings have been at Coast and NelsonMarlborough meetings.
Any Allowance?: Kindergarten is an equine freak, and has no stud value. An Australian writer suggests that he won id not have been allowed to start in any of the Australian classics—which are restricted to colts and fillies; but it is not easy to believe that he will be conceded the gelding allowance in weight-for-age races if he ever goes across the Tasman.
No Trip: The idea of taking Route March to Rand wick has been dropped. The crack two-year-old has had to be eased up owing to a doubtful fiont joint, but it is hoped that he will be able to run at Ellerslie in the Autumn. Beau Vite and Proud Fox have arrived in Sydney. Both lost some skin on the voyage, but otherwise they are in fine condition. They are in F. McGrath’s stable.
Tom-Tom Destroyed: The West Derby studmaster, ivlr. A. E. Preston, suffered a severe loss when the brood mare Tom-Tom had to be destroyed owing to internal injuries. Mr. Preston has been dis-tinctly-unfortunate with this family, for a few months ago he had to destroy Catalini, the dam of Tom-Tom and Catalogue, when the mare was in foal to Defoe', while last Spring he lost a coll by Ninth Duke from TomTom.
Riders at Wingatui: Some riding engagements made or Thursday’s programme at Wingatui are: L. J.'Ellis, Lady Derby. Royal Chief; S. Green, Happy Night, Go d Nugget, Kurawhi, Leighnor; A. Didham, Trench Fight; A. Messervy, Schoolgirl, Doria, Palfrey, Alias; L. Stokes. Gay Parade, Espionage; A. h. Ellis: Wardress; C. Wilson, Winning Rival, Pleading, Bird of Prey, Blue Abbev, Knight Commander; R. Register,’Donadea; C. Fox, the Wrecker Palo Alto, Cymric; W. Caddy, Lord Midas.
Double Winner: Bronze Bird, who annexed a double at Rotorua, gives promise of developing into a useful galloper, and a good future is predicted for her. She has had only three starts to date, finishing fourth at Thames in her only previous appearance. She is a three-year-old filly by Bronze Eagle from the Acre mare Cat-Bird, a full sistei to that useful northern sprinter Prince Acre. The family traces back to the well-known Juliet taproot, a line that has been responsible lor many leading performers.
Alexcelia Good: . It was a difficult task lor a maiden performer to tackle a field of good hacks in the Nolan Cup, but the three-year-old filly, Alexcelia, made the pace and then proved’equal to holding off all challenges. She is by Captain Bunsby from Silver Wings, a mare from the family that has produced Inflation, Cold Steel, Rebekah and many other good performers. Alexcelia had shown promising form at Trentham, and looks likely to develop into a useful performer. ’
Chary: ~ x . 1 Chary, who has been weighted tor the Westland meeting is a three-year old by Inflation- Idle Chat. As a two--year-old he won three races, and was twice second and once third in seven starts. His victories were in the Feeding Juvenile Stakes, beating Talenta and Serena in 1.1 1-5; in the Woodville Sapling Stakes (on a heavy track) beating Ringcraft and Air Flight, in 1.10 for five and a half furlongs; and in the Champagne Stakes at Riccarton, beating Shika.i and Nightglass, with Absolve and Doria others in the field, in 1.11 3-5 for the six furlongs.
Training Appointment: L. (“Brusher”) Gray will take charge of Mr. F. Ormond’s horses, who were trained by S. J. Reid up till the time of his death. Gray was at one time private trainer to the Douglas Estate at Te Mahanga, but in 1923 he set up as a public trainer and passed many horses through his stable, among them Kinross, High Court, Ruby Step, Princess Bell, Cop - per Nob, Margaret Rose, Flamingo, Marae Quex, and Hunting Chorus. Since the death of Reid, the five apprentices serving their time in his stable, W. L. Aitken, J. S. Campbell, S. Paiamore, J. Galvin and G. From Speedy Family: The Epsom track was fast on the concluding dgy of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting, so that 2.17 for the Trotting Stakes was not spectacular, although the winner Symphony, was credited with a record for the race. Symphony, who is trained by F. J. Smith for Mr. E. G. Bridgens, is by Rey de Oro from Knockinny Belle. She is a half-sister to Cavan Chief, who held the mile record in saddle at 2.6 until Smile Again reduced it. Kinawley is also from Knockinny Belle.
Dam of Good Winners: The death of Our Nurse has been reported to the New Zealand Trotting Association. Foaled in 1914, Our Nurse was by Wildwood Junr. from Imperial Polly, and she took a useful record. Sure and Probationer were outstanding performers and they reached the best classes, while the others mentioned have also revealed good form to this stage of their careers. Our Nurse’s last foal is a colt by Grattan Loyal.
Bargain Horse: Vain Lad, who won the Forbes Handicap at Epsom on the second day, gave one of his best displays, and, in trotting 3.23 3-5 off 3.33, revealed fine speed. Vain Lad was purchased in Australia some yearn ago by Mr. E. G. Bridgens for £3OO, and after winning four races, was sold for £lO. Practically forgotten as a racing proposition for a few seasons, Vain Lad showed some form at country sports meetings and less than a year ago he was acquired for £8 by Mr. W. Hoskings, for whom he registered a win and several placings. Quite recently, | Vain Lad was put in the sale ring and purchased at 194 guineas by Mr. E.
