U.S, CATHOLICS’ OPINION [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT,] LONDON, Febrary 17. The Lisbon correspondent of th’e “Daily Telegraph” says it is learned that Mr Willkie visited Ireland at the instigation of Cardinal Hinsley, Archbishop of Westminster. Mr Willkie told Mr de Valera that Irish Catholic opinion in the United States did not support Mr de Valera’s attitude towards Britain, and demanded full co-operation against Germany without insisting on a united Ireland as a condition. Mr de Valera was reported to be much impressed. Mr. Willkie formed the opinion that Mr de Valera might revise his attitude towards Britain and even consider the question of giving bases.
MR. DE VALERA’S DENIAL (Recd. February 18, 2.10 p.m.) LONDON, February 17. Mr. De Valera described the “Daily Telegraph’s” Lisbon correspondent’s version of the Willkie interview as completely devoid of foundation. He said: I do not believe that Mr. Willkie could have given such an impression of our conversation. POSSIBLE VISIT TO CHINA. WASHINGTON, February 16. Mr Wendell Willkie has indicated that he is considering a visit to the war zones in. China, similar to his visit to Britain. He has not yet reached a definite decision.
PORTUGUESE TO LEAVE? ROME, February 16. The Italian radio stated: The Portuguese Government has ordered Portuguese in Eire to leave the country, because communications between Portugal and Eire are shortly to be stopped. _____
