NEW BRIGHTON TROTS MANKIND WINS DOUBLE CHRISTCHURCH,. Feb. 15. After two days of heavy rain, it was thought that the New Brighton Trotting Club’s course would be heavy for to-day’s racing, but this • was proved to be wrong, when in the first race Chateau, from a 3.40 mark, recorded 3.33 1-5, while the second race the mile saddle was won easily by Mankind in 2.10 2-5. The course has seldom been in better order for a Summer meeting, for the rain had taken the sting out of the track without leaving it holding. The attendance was well up to the average, although not as big as last year’s crowd, on the occasion of the celebration of the club’s jubilee. The totalisator investments amounted to £34,881, a decrease of £5200 on last year’s total of £40,081, but they exceeded the £34,483/10/- put through in 1939. After the Bristol Beaufort Handicap an inquiry was held to consider a charge against E. J. Smith, driver of Bush Laddie, under Rule 373, regarding the manner in which he handled the horse, but after considering the evidence the Judicial Committee found that no action was warranted.
For unduly flourishing his whip, J. Wilson, driver of Bon Chance in the Vice-Presidents’ Handicap, was fined £2. Results:—

NOTES ON THE RACING. [special to “star.”] CHRISTCHURCH, February 15. The Vice-President’s Handicap resulted in a clear-cut win for the Addington-trained Chateau who, patiently handled by R. Young, outstayed the remainder of the field after Native Ruler had established a lead that looked certain to land him a winner. The big field made a mixed beginning, and Danzie Guy, Patti Nelson, Royal Parrish, Syntax and El Peta were soon out of the race. With a quarter of a mile covered, Native Ruler went to the front and at the end of half a mile had a six lengths lead of Gipsy Lee, Chateau, Highrate and Renegade. Native Ruler increased his lead to 10 lengths into the back, but half a mile from home Chateau had 'picked up a good deal of ground, and entering the straight Native Ruler began to tire. At the distance post Chateau had the race in hand and Bon Chance also put in a good run. Chateau won easily while Bon Chance was too good a stayer for Native Ruler. Then followed Gaynor, Renegade, Highrate, and Patti Nelson.
An Easy Win: Although Mankind only had a length in his favour at the end of the Flying Fortress Handicap, he won with a lot in hand. Chameleon and Pamelus went out smartly, while Mankind also began smartly. Before the turn was reached Mankind hit the front, and after Chameleon had
broken up Mankind opened up a break of six lengths on Gay Avon, Pamelus, Ochiltree, Elue Diamond, and Purina. Before the half-mile post was reached Chameleon had picked up ground, but Mankind was still going steadily in front, and he led into the straight ahead of Pamelus, Gay Avon, Blue Diamond, and Ochiltree. Mankind went on for a very edsy win from Pamelus, with Ochiltree in third place ahead of Gay Avon. Blue Diamond and Chameleon. His Real Form:
Bronze Eagle showed his real form when he won the Army Handicap in the manner of a really good racehorse. Indian Clipper and Lord Zetland were the quickest to begin, while Grattanita, Jill Tar, Glen Travis and Bronze Eagle were most prominent of the remainder. The order was practically the same passing the stands, but going out of the straight Oxford Scholar put in a brilliant burst that took him from almost last into first place in two furlongs. With Indian Clipper, Oxford Scholar led down the back and round the top turn followed by Jill Tar and Bronze Eagle. The last-named then put in a great run over the last two furlongs and a furlong from the post he had spread-eagled the field. Four lengths behind the winner was Indian Clipper, who was followed by Oxford Scholar, Glen Travis, Jill Tar, and Grattanita. It was a brilliant performance on the part of the winner who recorded 3.21 for a mile and a-half from a 3.32 mark. Favourite Beaten:
Willowbank was a warm favourite for the Churchill Handicap, but rushed to the front in less than three furlongs, she essayed the work ol pacemaker, a task that left her without much in reserve to withstand the determined challenge of Fremont, Navy Blue and Zincali. Smile Again stood on the mark, and Rowi was first away ahead of Fremont and Willowbank, but before reaching the stands the order was Willowbank, Rowi, Navy Blue, Fremont, Bill 8., Harold Guy, and Cruiser. The horses were crawling along and the field became well bunched. The order was practically the same until the straight was reached, but half-way down the running Willowbank’s driver became uneasy, and the mare was asked for her best. She quickly faded, and Navy Blue took the lead. The latter appeared a winner, but Fremont, finishing straight and true, was going away from his field at the finish. Zincali put in a fine finish and Was only a length behind Navy Blue at the finish. Next were Acuity, Willowbank, Bill 8., and Wee Potts. A Brilliant Effort:
Haughty registered a brillant performance to win the President’s Handicap, and her 4.28 2-5 from a 4.42 mark was one of the best performances recorded on the New Brighton track. Channel Fleet made a good beginning and was soon leading from Warning, Silver Laddie, Shadow Queen, MacGregor, Twenty Grand, Haughty and Happy Man. The field raced in tbis order until the last round was commenced, when Haughty shot to the front, and after her went Happy Man. He got to within a length of Haughty at the half-mile post, but the later immediately put on a break ol foui lengths, and Happy Man was again left with leeway to make up. Happy Man with the greatest gameness kept on in an almost hopeless chase after the flying leader. Haughty in her effortless style came on to win apparently with ease by three lengths, whip* Shadow Queen with a fast run got to within a length of Happy Man. Next to finish were the wellbeaten Warning, Silver Laddie and Distributor. The winner was a class above the rest.
A Slow-run Race: Biworthy with all the best of the running and trotting two miles without a mistake, easily won the Bristol Beaufort Handicap in the comparatively slow time of 4.36 2-5 from a 4.38 mark. The disappointment of the race was Bush Laddie,
who at only one stage of the race showed any of his well-known speed. Native Huon was the quickest beginner and led from Biworthy, Parrish Guide, Tan John, and Reception. The pace was slow and with half the journey covered Native Huon was still setting the pace from Timworthy, Biworthy, Reception, Gerfalcon, Parrish Guide and Tan John, with Bush Laddie still last. Bush Laddie made a fast run along the back and on the turn, and several sulkies out he picked up ground. Into the straight led Native Huon, .Biworthy, Timworthy. Reception, Ferfalcon, Parrish Guide, and Bush Laddie. In the run to the post, Native Huon faded and Biworthy came away, to win very comfortably from Gerfalcon, with Native Huon, Reception and Bush Laddie following. The time was ridiculously slow considering the class of horses engaged, and the state of the track as proved by the performances of other horses earlier in the day. Accident Affects Result:
The form in the Newall Welcome Handicap cannot be taken as a true indication of the merits of the horses engaged, for less than a mile from home Wainoni Girl broke and E. J. Smith, driver of Drumoak. first and fifth favourites on the totalisator, received a heavy fall. At the end of half a mile, Wainoni Girl was leading from Shadow Queen, Drumoak, Purina, Gay Avon, Coquette and Honestus. In the back stretch the order was practically the same, but half a mile from home Wainoni Girl broke and Drumoak, who was following, fell and badly interfered with Chameleon and several other horses. This left Pamelus with a substantial lead, which she held right to the post. She was under a hard drive over the last part, and just struggled home ahead of Ochiltree, Coquette, and Single Star. It was not a true-run race owing to the accident. An Outsider:
Mankind, who had won the mile saddle race earlier in the day, returned a dividend of more than a third of a century when he won the final event in a close finish. Before a quarter of a mile had been covered Aspirant took the lead and was followed past the stands by King’s Jubilee, Roan Duke, Colonel Axworthy, Huguenot and Mankind. Into the back stretch and past the half-mile post the order was practically the same and Aspiratn led into . the straight ahead of Roan Duke, King’s Jubilee, Mankind, Three Tens, Huguenot, Colonel Axworthy, and Worthy' Need. The leader tired rather badly, and in a hard finish Mankind just got up to beat Huguenot by a neck, while Colonel Axworthy was only half a length away third, followed by Worthy Need, Stormtost, Aspirant, 'Roan, Duke and Three Tens.
