AUDITOR’S TAG
PETONE COUNCIL’S ACCOUNTS The Petone Borough Council’s statement of accounts fqr the year ended March 31, 1940, was returned by the Audit Department with a tag, because the full amount of.l/- for doses of urecolin to prevent hydatids in ( dogs was not collected in. all cases when dog licences were being issued. The town clerk, Mr. B. C. Knox, explained that the regulations provided for the owner of the dog, .on payment of the fee of 1/-, to receive two bottles each containing four arecolin tablets. The dose for a dog of the toy variety was only two tablets though for a large dog it was eight. That meant that eight tablets of _ a poisonous nature had to be handed out for a dog which only needed two a year, and there was a danger if the tablets were left lying- about. To overcome this, the council had supplied in the case of small dogs, one bottle of tablets at a cost of 6d. It was this procedure which had been queried. The acting-mayor, Mr. J. C. Burns: I don’t think the treasurer should be unduly concerned over a tag like this. The town clerk: This is a -regulaiton where we should be allowed to use our common sense.
The statement of accounts was adopted. ■
