PLANES COLLIDE
N.S.W. COAST TRAGEDY. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] (Recd. Jan. 17, 9.30 a.m.). SYDNEY, January 17._ Two Air Force planes collided in mid-air, and crashed into the sea three miles from the coast off Terrigal, midway between Sydney and Newcastle. Only one occupant of the planes has hitherto been rescued, and it has not been ascertained yet how many were aboard each machine. The survivor was rescued by a coastal vessel after clinging to the tail of the machine, which had been smashed off in the impact. An eye-witness said that three planes were flying in formation, and were making sharp turns, when two of them collided. One crashed straight down into the sea, while the other travelled several miles before it also crashed into the sea. An intensive search of the area was made by planes from Sydney and Newcastle, and by two coastal vessels and by fishing boats, but no sign of the other occupants of the crashed machines was found. Two pilots are missing, and are considered to be dead.
