BONFIRE DURING BLACKOUT
FINES ON FASCIST. LONDON, November 14. James Lloyd, Cornwall-road, Ruislip, Middlesex, who said he had been a Fascist leader and member of the Fascist League, was at Uxbridge yesterday fined £l5, or two months’ imprisonment, for having a bonfire in his garden during blackout hours, and £lO or two months for flashing a torch. He was also ordered to pay 15/6 court costs and £5/5/- legal expenses. He pleaded guilty. It was stated that during an alert on September 23, a bonfire in Lloyd’s garden burst into flames and lit up the surrounding houses in an alarming way. When wardens climbed over, the fence to put out the bonfire Lloyd was abusive. He flashed his torch around in the air, and said to a warden, “You are a panicky lot. Wait until you get 200 dive bombers overhead.”
Police Sergeant Bentley said Lloyd spoke several languages, including French and German. He had served in the Army, but was discharged because of his political opinions. Complaints had been received of his indiscriminate use of a torch. Lloyd, who denied he was antiBritish, gave the Nazi salute as he left the court and cried, “Is this justice?” ______ '
