Miss L. Smith left to-day on a visit to the North Island.

Mr. W. Meldrum, left this morffing, for Blenheim. Mr. T. A. Power, Public Trust Office, Greymouth, has received notice of transfer to Waipukurau. . Mr. H. Greenwood, Goods Branch, Department Greymouth, .will leav.e on Monday next, on transfer to Waipara. Messrs A. McNeil and J. Kinloch, who. have been visiting Mr. and Mrs. L. McNeil, left to-day, <?n return to Timaru. Mr. Campbell Wyeth, of the Public Works Department, Invercargill, will arrive to-day, on transfer to the Greymouth branch, clerical staff.

Miss Rhodes, who has been supervisor of the Nurses’ Home, at the Westland Hospital, left this morning, to take a similar appointment at Porirua Hospital, Wellington.

A London cablegram announced the death of Lord Wakefield, in’ his 81st year. He was prominent in mot-or-fuel organisations and gave large sums to encourage motoring and aerial research, besides making important art gifts to the nation. He was Lord Mayor of London in 1915-16.

A London cablegram stated that the Trinity College of Music has appointed Mr. C. H. Adolph Mann, as. examiner for the North Island. He is due to arrive in the middle of June. Doctor James Lyon has been appointed for the South Island, and is due in July.

The appointment has been gazetted of Dr. E. Marsden, C.8.E., M.C., as scientific adviser to the New Zealarid Fighting Forces. He is attached 'to Army Headquarters, Wellington, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Lieu-tenant-Colonel Marsden is secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, an appointment he received when the department was established in 1928.

A London cablegram announced that Six' Luke Thompson was killed, when he was caught in the machinery operating an electric winch. He was a director of Messrs John Thompson and Sons (Sunderland) Ltd., coal merchants, and was Unionist M.P. for Sunderland from 1922 to 1929, and since 1931. He was born in 1867, and received his knighthood in 1934.

The promotion to Admiral of Sir Andrew Cunningham, who commands the Mediterranean Fleet,- is announced, together with that of Rear Admiral Pridham-Whippell, his second in command, who becomes a Vice-Ad-miral. Amongst other promotions is that of Vice-Admiral Six Max Horton, who is in command of the British submarine forces, who becomes an Admiral.—Official Wireless.

At the office of the Social Security Department, Greymouth, yesterday, the staff farewelled Mrs. R. B. Wooding, on the occasion of her retirement form the Department. The Registrar, Mr. G. G. M. Mitchell, eulogised the services which Mrs. Wooding had rendered to the Department of Labour, in which she commenced her career in Greymouth ten years ago, and during the past two. years, to the Social Security Department. His remarks were endorsed by Mr. W. Richmond, the acting-District Chief Clerk, Miss D. Willis, senior typist, Messrs V. Thomas, R. McTaggart', R. Crase, P. F. Daly and Miss M. Butcher. Mr. Mitchell, on behalf of the staff, presented Mrs. Wooding with a fountain pen and wished her every happiness in her married life. Mrs. Wooding thanked the speakers for their remarks and for their gift.

The death occurred at Richmond yesterday of William Henry Bowater, well known in the sawmilling business on the West Coast and at Nelson. Deceased was born at Kidderminster, in 1863, and came to New Zealand with his parents, residing for a time at Charleston. Later, Mr Bowater lived at Blackspoint, Ikamatua, and Reefton. ■ He was a member and later chairman of the Inangahua County Council, and also a member of the Hospital Board. HO and the late Mr G. F. Bryan became partners in the sawmilling business, Mr Bowater carrying on at Ikamatua, while Mr Bryan managed the business at Westport. Later, Mr Bowater also went to Westport, where, besides engaging in sawmilling, he took » an active interest in local affairs, as member and chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, and president of the Buller A. and P. Association. He married a daughter of Mr C. H. Rhodes, of Reefton. H\,wife survives him, also five daughters, Mesdames Snodgrass, Nelson; Petley, Westport; Dickie, Murchison; Burmeister, Melbourne; and Duder, Christchurch; also four sons, William, Auckland; Percy, Bulls (Cape Road); Charles (Southland), and Roy (Nelson).
