CHESS. [per press association.] TIMARU, December 27. The chess congress was continued at Tjmaru to-night. Results of completed games were: Second round— Fairburn v. Lennard, the former resigned; Scott v. Wade, the former resigned; Vincent v. Newell, the former resigned. Third round —Scott beat Newick. DRAUGHTS. CHRISTQHURCH, December 27. The New Zealand Centennial draughts championship tournament, now in progress at the Sydenham Library, was advanced a further stage to-day. A feature of the day’s play was the fine play of a former champion, J. Gardiner, of Nelson, who has so far not lost a game, and has only once been held to a draw. To-day he won two games from G. A. Brown, of Christchurch, who has won the championship on six previous occasions.
The relative positions of the competitors are: J. Gfirdiner 11 2, W. Davis 10, G. A. Brown 9, T. Gelhooley 8, F. Hutchins 7, F. W. Graham and A. Louness s|, D. J. Wilson 4|, C. Johnstone 3|, C. Donald 3, J. Brodie 2|, W. Meldrum 2.
