APPLES AND PEARS
ADVANCE IN PAYMENTS.
[per press association.]
HASTINGS, December 16
Fruitgrowers are likely to be granted an extra threepence a case on the average for their apples and pears during the coming season under the Government’s marketing scheme, according to information gained after a meeting of Hawke’s Bay growers held in camera to discuss the Government’s proposals. It is understood the proposals have yet to receive the Cabinet’s approval. It is believed the Minister for Marketing, Mr. Nash, has put forward proposals to growers for an average payment of 5/3 a case for pip fruit, against 5/- last season. Growers who were interviewed agreed that if they are paid something more than they were for last season’s fruit, they must be satisfied in view of the fact that there has been no advance in the prices being paid for meat and dairy produce. It is claimed, however, that some further assistance could be given the industry if an overall reduction in costs could be brought about. The general feeling was that a marked improvement in this direction could be effected by attention to administrative costs.
