TODAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping

MEETINGS TO COME.

December 21— Manawatu. December 26—Waipukurau. December 26, 28— Manawatu. December 26, 28 —Dunedin. December 26, 28—Taranaki. December 26, 30, January 1, 2— Auckland. December 28—-Westland.

Working Well: Few horses work better at Wingatui than Night Pal, and it would be no surprise if he won a good race before the season is very much older.

Speedy: The two-year-old Chandelier (Salmagundi—Bright Mark) is to make his debut at the Dunedin meeting this month. He has been in work for some time and has a good turn of speed. New Trainer:

F. J. Johnson (New Plymouth) has taken out a trainer’s license and has under his care Taitoru, Boden Park and Miss Clipper. He is a son of J. P. Johnson, and some time back was a capable hurdle rider.

Coast Prospect: Waitaka hung on surprisingly well for minor money in the Knight Memorial at Hororata and only a strong finish by Skyrena robbed him of second money. He should pay his way on the West Coast circuit.

Consistent Hack:

Laughing Song is one of the most consistent hacks in commission and her connections appear to be unlucky that she has not won more races this season. Her 13 starts have produced one win, six seconds and three-fourths.

Bright Prospects: Caroline Bay made her debut' at Woodville and created a good impression by finishing fourth in a big field after anything but a good run. This is a neatly-turned filly in Sid Reid’s care and her holiday prospects look bright.

Nausbaum .Appeal: Owing to difficulty in arranging a passage back to Lyttelton, on Friday night, Mr H. F. Nicol has declined to act in the Nigger Boy appeal case, and Mr H. R. Peacock, of Waipukurau, has been appointed in his stead. —Press Assn.

Reformed:

Great Quex, one of the worst outlaws seen in New Zealand, was debarred from flat racing, but was just as incorrigible at the barrier when tried as a jumper. This season he has come back apparently completely reformed, and when he won at Woodville he stood up to the tape like a sheep. Friesland:

Friesland has been nominated for the Manawatu Cup only at Awapuni, and it is probable that he will return for the New Plymouth meeting. Friesland is in great heart and, providing hard tracks do, not, affect him, he should'be' difficult “to' dispose of in his coming engagements.

Reappearance Likely: Master Hotspur, a brilliant track galloper, and . who two seasons ago won the John Grigg and the Dunedin Champagne Stakes when trained by T. H. Gillett for Mr E. Hay, may reappear among the open-class sprinters at the holiday meetings in Otago. The Ringmaster horse is now owned in Central Otago. Expensive:

Since her rather easy win at Levin the two-year-old Tiderace filly Golden Moon has proved expensive to her Manawatu admirers. She raced once at Feilding and once at Woodville, but on neither occasion did she flater hei’ admirers. However, Golden Moon is a very big filly and appears to be still growing. She has shown galloping ability and, like the Tiderace breed, she should improve with age.

WAIPA MEETING.

COMMENTS ON FORM.

[special to “star.”]

AUCKLAND, December 16.

Intermittent rainshowers, some of them heavy, fell between the second and sixth races at the Waipa meeting, at Te Awamutu, on Saturday, and the firm going became greasy, with the result that several horses fell on the flat. Natal and Marie’s Choice fell in the first division of the Waipa Plate; Palmint, Gay Movie and Captain Bell in the Hack Cup. Opinions on Auckland Cup candidates at the meeting were for the most part negative in character. The scratching of Llangollen, the writer regards as ominous, for it is known that the mare has been lame on a number of occasions recently. Further reports will be awaited with keen interest, for many were expecting Llangollen to put up a grand, show at Ellerslie this month.

Greek Queen came splendidly from the rear to win the Te Awamutu Cup and the performance of the runnerup, Beau Leon, was rather disappointing, even allowing for the fact that he was making his first appearance since running third in the New Zealand Derby, The track may have been against him, but that proviso need not be applied to Cillas and Lou Rosa, two other three-year-olds who finished strongly for third and fourth, respectively. Cillas in particular gave the impression that he will pick up a stake at the A.R.C. carnival.

Olympus ran one of his good races in the Flyign Handicap, going out at very long odds, but he was unlucky to meet Lady Tinkle, who finished very solidly over the last 100 yards to beat him decisively by a neck. Sure Pay and Saxon Tor were prominent in running, but both weakened and Our Jean took the smallest part of the stake. Merry Vaals was scratched, so he is still a query in regard to the Railway Handicap, but none of the other sprinters seen out on Saturday is expected to move to the front of the discussions. Bronweri, 1-4 in the betting, was a complete failure. Lady Tinkle has been rehandicapped 41b for the big sprint, making her weight 8.11. Cheval de Volee took a very undistinguished part in the Paterangi Handicap, of sevpn.furlongs. Although owned by the president of the club, Mr. Martin Tims, and ridden by W. J. Broughton,. 51b over, Town Survey was at forlorn odds for the Ohaupb Handicap. ,He will take put again-when the company is not too good.

SYDNEY TOPICS.

RIVAL FOR YARALLA.

(By Air Mail.)

SYDNEY, December 15.

At least one stable declares itself to be not perturbed at the presence of the champion colt, Yaralla, in the December Stakes at Randwick. The connections, of Linemond, winner of the Nursery Handicap at the Rosehill meeting yesterday, state that the Veilmond colt will run in the Stakes. Linemond has won at his only two starts, and in each he has raced away from the field at the finish. S. Davidson, his rider, declared yesterday:— ‘He seems to have plenty of courage, and I was never afraid of defeat.” Tusculum, winner of the December Handicap yesterday, is to take his place in the A.J.C. Summer Cup on Boxing Day. His time for the distance, 11 furlongs, was 2.19, which is one and a-half seconds outside the record established by Oro in 1933. Similar decisions were announced for the two former New Zealand horses, Yours Truly and Malagigi, who filled the minor places behind Tusculum. Malagigi was favourite for yesterday’s race, as he was for the corresponding event last year, but it was only his second race after a spell, and he should improve when next he appears. Present firm favourite for the Villiers Stakes, to be run at Randwick next Saturday, is Rimveil, one of the best three-year-olds in Australia this season. Rimveil will be ridden by E. Bartie, who rode Red Thespian to victory in the Dundas Handicap at Rosehill yesterday. Red Thespian, with Feminist, is second choice, with Marengo and Stylish next. Ruling fancies for the Summer Cup. are Dewar, Kurrawid and Malagigi.

Trotting MEETINGS TO COME.

December 21—Reefton. December 26—Ashburton. December 26—Gore. December 26, 27—Westport. ■ December 27, 28, 31—Auckland. December 28—-Winton.

Giving Away Time: Ned Worthy, who is an acceptor for the Auckland Trotting Cup, is giving away a second to start.

Clay Pot: Auckland reports indicate that Clay Pot is working well and has done well since the last Auckland meeting. *

Best Not Seen: The best has not yet been seen of Durability, but there are indications that the Jack Potts gelding will race prominently during the holidays. He is engaged in the Gore Cup. Josedale Grattan:

If Josedale Grattan could reproduce the run which took him over two miles at Addington in August in 4.18 1-5, he would be dangerous in the Auckland Trotting Cup. The American horse was sore when raced later at Epsom, and as he had to be spelled for a few weeks it is possible that he is backward. For Auckland:

South Island stables will be well represented at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting which will commence on December 27. Besides the strong team comprising Cruiser, Mongolian, Ned Worthy, Ringtrue, Bill 8., Accountant, and Horse Power, engaged in the Auckland Cup, the lesser lights will contest other events at the meeting. This number includes Cynic, Mazaire, Toceetie, Colossal, Elite Rey, Listowel, Milestone, Latest Edition, Kilrea; Superior Rank, and Worthy Need. Hororata Winners:

Aurie’s Star, winner of the Glendore Handicap at the Hororata Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday, is six years old, but for one of her age she has done very little racing. Although she has long enjoyed a reputation for extreme speed this was Aurie’s Star’s first win. She is by Jack Potts from Minnie Yet, the dam of another useful performer, Mystery Yet. Boreas, who was successful in the Snowdon Trot Handicap, is 10 years old and he has left it rather late in life to begin winning races. He has always possessed plenty of speed but, somewhat erratic, he has been a cost-

ly r . failure to many of his supporters. He 13,3 half-brother to a good sprinter in Stormtost, but is never likely to reach the class of his relative. AUCKLAND T.C. DIVISION. AUCKLAND, December 16. The December Handicap, 3.5 class, one.mile and a quarter, at the Auckland Trotting Club’s Summer meeting has been divided. The prize money has been increased from £2BO to £4OO, with £2OO to each division, the second division to be run on the second day. The divisions are:—

First Division—Antarctic Star, Barbara Scott, Cam Derby, Cyone Girl, Josette, Rey Dillon, Erua Peter, Exporter, Franco, Josedale Dawn, Pear loro, Katoomba, More Worthy, Sparkling Pointer scr., Portadown 12, Magic Task 36. Brackets: Cyone Girl, Josette and Rey Dillon; Josedale Dawn and Pearloro.

Second Division: Auto Bingen, Blush Worthy, Charon, Synic, Escobar, Flashlight, Kallula, Lucky Derby, Parrish Boy, Sir Echo, Parrish Lad, Rama Direct, Vansom, Tasker Queen scr., Northern Smile 24, Mandalay 36. Brackets: Parrish Boy and Sir Echo, Rama Direct and Vansom.
