RUNANGA NOTES

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Pupils of the State School held a social evening at the School on Friday, when the opportunity was taken to bid farewell to Mr. J. A. McLeod, headmaster at the school for the past seven years, who has resigned to take the position of headmaster to the Musselburgh school, Dunedin. Miss Jean Wright presented Mr. McLeod with a toilet outfit on behalf of former pupils, and Miss Iris Darwell presented Mrs. McLeod with a bouquet. On behalf of the boys, Masters Frank Campbell and Jack Lee presented Mr. McLeod with a photograph of the school seven-a-side team. Mr. McLeod acknowledged the gifts in a short address. The evening concluded with the singing of the National Anthem and “Auld Lang Syne.” "A social evening was held, in the Druid’s Hall on Saturday, to farewell Mr. and Mrs. McLeod. Mr. J. McTigue, on behalf of the gathering presented an electric table lamp, and made eulogistic reference to the work of the guests during their residence in Runanga.

Mr. F. Oakley, on behalf of the Children’s ball committee presented the guests with two eiderdown rugs, and Mr. R. J. Armstrong oh behalf of the school committee made a presentation. Mr. E. Kennedy spoke on behalf of the Patriotic committee and Mesdames F. Oakley, E. Kennedy and W.‘ Wright also spoke of the good services the guests had given to the town.

Mr. McLeod thanked the speakers for their remarks, and for the presentations and stated that they regretted leaving Runanga, where they had made many valuable friendships. Whatever they had done, they felt it the duty of every citizen to do. Music for the dancing was provided by Messrs D. and G. Kendrick, D. Bell and S. Gilligan. Mr. R. Hambley was M.C. Competitions were won by Mrs. Wafer and Mrs. Hambley.
