COBDEN NOTES
[our own correspondent.] Mr. H. R. Barrett presided over a meeting of the Cobden Soldiers’ Committee last evening. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs R. Roper and W. Harding. Mr. W. Scott was declared the winner of the “coal” book competition. It was left to the acting-chairman to arrange for a meeting to form a local branch of the Home Guard. In this connection it is understood that a meeting will be advertised for Sunday morning next. During the past week or so of warmer weather, the various bathing pools have been well-patronised by children and adults. In most cases a certain amount of unofficial supervision is exercised and the better swimmers in most cases look after the younger and often more venturesome. The Greymouth Fire Board has added a lean-to to the local fire station for the purpose of storing the reel. This should enable the earlycomers to reach a fire some minutes before the engine. All that is now required is for the station to receive a coat of paint as at present the building presents a poor appearance for a public building.
