LEASED BASES. [BY CABLE. —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] (Received November 29, 10.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, November 28. Mr. Morgenthau said that the question of the United States taking over British possessions in the Western Hemisphere should not. be considered until the British exhaust their liquid assets. _ •_ Mr Morgenthau said that Britain has no reason to consider selling her possessions, in order to raise cash. He indicated that Britain had still large reserves of cash and negotiable securities in the Western Hemisphere. Making his first statement after his return from an inspection of the United States bases in the Caribbean, he declared that he was tremendously impressed by the deal giving the United States the right to lease bases, which was possibly the most-important thing since the leasing of the Panama Canal.
BRITAIN’S HUGE CONTRACTS 1 (Received November 29, 10.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, November 28. The “Journal of Commerce’s” Washington correspondent says: Britain has provided over 200 million dollars for the expansion of United States aircraft, munitions, and arms manufacturing industries,- since the war began, and expects to place nearly 2000 million dollars of additional orders in the coming year. Of the 200 million, 120 million dollars have gone to the aircraft industry, and 85 million to other lines of war production. Orders at present total 2500 million dollars, 70 per cent, of which are for war planes and engines. The remainder are for artillery, munitions, and arms. The correspondent adds that the programme is intended to carry on through the Summer of 1942.
