His father is over 6ft and was the shortest of a large family. An Improver: Defy, who won a race each day at Levin has now won three races in a row. She is by Defoe, and is a five-year-old half-sister to Boughal. A feature of her successes has been her strong finishes, and she promises to win her way to open class. Cornish: The St. Andrew’s Handicap winner Cornish, is a four-year-old gelding by Foxbridge-Miss Egypt, by Egypt (brother to Desert Gold and Nigger Minstrel) from pourparler, by FinlandGossip, by Wallace. Gossip is also the dam of,Bobrikoff, a good winner in his day. *

Peculiar Brand: Belle Cane is to run in the Great Northern Derby. The filly was not quite up to the level of the colts at Riccarton, but she is more likely to improve than any of them. Belle Cane carries a peculiar brand—a bottle in a wine glass. All horses owned by Mr. W. J. Smith are marked in this way, the reason being that he is chairman of the Australian Glass Company. Capricious: It has been decided to retire Capricious to the stud and such an attrac-tively-bred mare should help to enrich the Stud Book. Capricious was got by Night Raid from Egotism, by Demosthenes —Conceit by Boniform — Lady Wayward 11., by Ladas. Egotism is also the dam of Autobiography, Wayward, Pride, Jaloux, Ilkley, Importance, Hauteur, Coxcomb, Mercenary and Posture. Dark Eagle: Dark Eagle, who won the principal event on the second day at Levin is q five-year-old gelding by Bronze Eagle. First Win: Blue Border, who won his first race when he beat the penalised Distress Signal in the Maiden Race at Levin on Monday, is a three-year-old gelding by Myosotis, owned by Mr. J. Jamieson, of Masterton, and trained by J. W. Lowe, at Trentham. Blue Border has now had seven starts for a win and two minor placings.

Redeemed: Wings of Song was left several lengths in the sprint on the first day at Levin, but made amends on Monday, when he» won the Koputaroa Handicap, with something in hand, and in fast time. This was his first win in open company, but the way he won suggested that he will not be long in repeating. Splendid Performance: A feature of the Open Sprint on the second day at Ellerslie was the splendid performance put up by the topweight, Llangollen, who got away badly, and looked hopelessly placed, but came home brilliantly into fourth place. This mare is a first class sprinter, and should soon earn a good sprint stake. Two On End: Teacony was a visitor from Rotorua for the Levin meeting, but his reputation preceded him and he was made a good favourite. Though drawn well out, he soon reached the front and he won on the bit by a couple of lengths. Teacony has now won at both starts he has had this season. He is a three-year-old colt by Gascony from the Tea Tray-Bouvardia mare, Tea Tattle, dam also of Candico,.. Begorrah, and the yearling who brought top price of 2,000 guineas at the yearling sales at Trentham last January. Teacony cost 140 guineas as a yearling.

Imported Stock: Mr. J. R. McKenzie had two imported horses at Forbury Park in Spangled Maiden and Spencer Volo. They were both slow at striking into gait, and the failure to get going settled any chance they held.
