' MONTHLY MEETING. ) [OUB OWN OOBBEStONDBNT.j HOKITIKA, October 22. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. G. Heinz, A. R. Elcock, F. D. E. Freitas, T. W. Duff, C. Caliari, D. P. Stuart. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. W. H. Stopforth and H. T. Parry. The Treasurer’s statement showed receipts £3903/18/6, payments £1899/8/4. Accounts 'amounting to £l4BB/19/2 were passed for payment. Mr Heinz reported on the examination of the reservoir by members, in company with Mr Watson (ex-City Engineer of Durban), and recommended an application of a quantity of bendonite. . • The Abattoirs report stated: Stock slaughtered for the month of Sepr tember amounted to 15 cows, 12 heifers, 77 bullocks, 187 sheep, 10 pigs, 2 calves; condemned 1 bullock. Fees collected for month amounted to £54 2/6. Fees for corresponding month last year £65/18/-. It was resolved to call tenders for the painting and repairing of the sexton’s and slaughterman’s cottages. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Municipal Association of New Zealand, advising that the Municipal Conference, 1941, will be held at Auckland, commencing on March. 3 1941. From, the New Zealand Refrigerating Co.j Ltd., advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into the Hokitika Abbatoir area during the month of September, 1940, viz.: 168 sheep. From Mrs J. Shaw, Hampden Street, asking for' several loads' of sand at the frontage of her property, in order to level up the frontage. Referred'to the Public Works Committee. , , From Mr Ben Brown, Park Street, asking for a few loads of gravel in front of his residence, as the frontage is in a very wet condition. —Referred to Public Works Committee. From the secretary, Hokitika Businessmen’s Association, forwarding copy of letter sent to the Member for Westland protesting against the proposed amendments to the Shops and Offices Act and asking that the Council support the protest. —Agreed to support protest From the secretary, Westland Master Butchers’ Industrial Union of Employers, Greymouth, asking the Council to agree to the appointment of a member of their association to the Borough Abattoir Committee in, an advisory capacity. No objection ia From the hon. secretary of All Saints’ Church Committee, enclosing rough plan of subdivision of Lot 2, Reserve 477, and Lot 2, Reserve 47 7A, Sewell Street, into two ° r three sections, and asking Council s consent thereto.—Referred to Reserves Committee for report. . From the Westland Co-op. Dairy Co. Ltd., regarding extraordinary water fees and meter chaiges. Re ferred to Town Clerk. From Miss G. Appleton notifying the Council that she will be leaving its employ about Christmas time. From the hon. secretary, Hokitika Beautifying Association, stating that they had made application for subsidised labour for two men for a period of eight weeks for the Purpose of assisting residents with the forming of roadside lawns, and they would like to have the approval of the Council to carry on with this work. Also, asking if the Council would be prepared to subsidise the work to the extent of 10/- a day for the cost of the horse and dray, up to the amount of £5. It is found that this amount would approximate, roughly, 6d. per load. —Request granted. Foreman to supervise.
