TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

‘ Galloping MEETINGS TO COME. October 24, 26, 28—Wellington. October 26 —Poverty Bay. October 26, 28—Gore. October 28 —Waikato Hunt. • October 28 —Poverty Bay. October 28—Waverley. October 2?—North Canterbury. November 1, 2—Whangarei. November 2—Rangitikei. November 2—Banks Peninsula. November 2—Poverty Bay. November 9—Napier Park. November 9, 11 —Avondale. November 9, 11, 13, 16—Canterbury. November 16 —Napier Park. November 16, 18—Waikato. November ,23 —Southland. November 23—Levin. November 23, 25—Auckland. November 30—Ashburton. November 30, December 2—Feilding. Blue Coat: . Blue Coat, the winner of the Spring Stakes at Timaru, is a chestnut four-year-old gelding by Pink Coat-Miss Mufiitt, by Tea Tray-Bo Peep, by Bezonian-Sheperdess. Good Progruss: Yogi has made good progress in his preparation for his New Zealand Cup engagement. He finished solidly from the back at Masterton into third place, and his performances at Trentham will be closely watched. Though Yogi comes from the Eulogy family which has been more noted for speed than true stamina he has always won his races by coming from the back, and he is warmly fancied for the big two miler. Ammon Ra’s Relative:

Phyto was making only her second appearance when she finished solidly from seven or eight places back in the straight to cut down the pacemaking Cheerful Lady in the Maiden Stakes at Masterton. In her previous outing, at Foxton, she was left at the start. She is a three-year-old daughter of Foxbridge and Ammon Ra’s full-sister Prolyxo, and she cost Mrs. W. Richmond 500 guineas at the yearling sales. On this effort she may be another high-class horse to emerge from Masterton maiden grade.

Highly Impressive: The win of Mr. W. Greenhill’s three-year-old gelding, Leighnor at Washdyke on Saturday is stated to have been the most impressive seen in hack.class for some time. Over the last furlong, Leighnor outclassed what was really a good class hack field, and his time, 1.12 3-5 was only a fifth of a second outside the frack record for hacks, 1.12 2-5, held by Chirp, who, incidentally, won the open sprint on Saturday in fast time. Leighnor is bred to carry on with the good work, and he promises to be a real bargain for Mr. Greenhill who purchased the Leighon gelding at the Trentham yearling" sales for 90 gns. His wins at his last two starts have been expected.

Handicaps for Stewards: Following are the handicaps for the Stewards’ Handicap, of £BOO, six furlongs, to be run on the first day (November 9) of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Metropolitan meeting: Saxon Tor 9.0, Sleeveless 8.12, Density 8.11, Duncannon 8.9, Nigger Boy 8.8, Rebel Mate 8.6, Sir Crusoe, 6eau Leon, Spanish Lad, Doria, Bronwen 8.5, St. Cloud, Nightcalm 8.4, Dark Flight, Sir Beau 8.3, Night Eruption 8.2, Elonde Princess, Toro Koura 8.0, Enrich, Rakahanga 7.13, Lambourn 7.11, Endorsement 7.9, Chary 7.8, Not Out, Don’t Forget 7.5, Heath 7.4, Gold Flight 7.2, Kentucky 7.1, Rebel Star, Raeburn, Schoolgirl, Gay Parade, Poutautau, Retrogression, Nelumbo, Belle Cane, Foxola 7.0. A Sensational Race:

No more sensational racethan yesterday’s Caulfield Cup has been seen on the Australian Turf, states the Sydney Sunday Sun of Sunday last. Recovered from the mysterious ailment which caused him to stop to a walk when leading the Epsom Handicap field at Randwick a fortnight earlier, Beaulivre scored narrowly from the lightly-weighted Gladynev. Both these' horses are owned in the Dominion and are both New Zealandbred, so once again the superiority of New Zealand thoroughbred stock was demonstrated. Both Historian and High Caste, whom he beat by inches for third, were unlucky in the running but trouble developed for some of the field before the start. El Golea began kicking at the barrier, lashing out right and left, injuring Katanga, who retaliated in kind and soon the melee became general. Jockeys galloped their mounts away ‘'from the danger zone and Reading, ridden by T. Webster, had his near hind leg cut badly before the field could be induced to line up. Webster apparently was debating whether he should dismount or not. Finally, he got Reading away well and he led to the turn, but then he dropped out of the contest.

Moonee Valley Cup, and has now 9.10.

Beaulivre has now scored 21 wins, eight seconds, and three thirds in 34 starts. He has won £16,575 in stakes.

J. Thompson will ride Scientist in the Melbourne Cup. Reading’s leg is still troublesome. His future programme is doubtful. El Golea has a cut on his hind leg. He will not race again for some time. The other Cup runners are fit. Beaulivre is a likely runner in the Cox Plate on Saturday, when his opponents are likely to include Ajax, High Caste, and Beau Vite. BIG COUP IN PROSPECT. SYDNEY, October 20. If Beau Vite should win the Melbourne Cup bookmakers throughout Australia will be faced with the worst settling in five years on the two cups double. In an • Australian-wide plunge which caught the ring nap ping, Beaulivre and Beau Vite were coupled for nearly £lOO,OOO in the last two days, says the Sydney “Sunday Sun.” - The commission was launched late on Thursday' afternoon, when Beaulivre, having drawn the rail, became a certain starter in the Caulfield Cup. Wagering was continued on Friday and the weight of money became so great that bookmakers were endeavouring to reduce their liabilities in Melbourne, but the fielders there had been caught napping just as badly. Beaulivre and Maikai were supported to win £25,000, but the men behind the Beaulivre plunge were so certain that Beau Vite would fulfil his part that they did not look for extensive “insurance” after the last race at Flemington yesterday. Beau Vite is now hot favourite for the Melbourne Cup, - with Historian, Lucrative and Maikai fancied in that order. THOROUGHBREDS FOR U.S.A. AUCKLAND, October 22. Two thoroughbreds are on the Mariposa en route to the United States. They are Two Ton Tony and an un-named nineteen-months-old colt by Beau Pere from Nepean. Both have been sold by Mr. W. J. Smith, of Scone, New South Wales to Mr. Louis B. Mayer, .of cinema fame. Mr. Smith intended to take the horses to race in America, but was too busy with war work in Australia, so he sold them to Mr. Mayer, who,[ for a long time, has been trying .to} get good Australian horses. | Trotting i MEETINGS TO COME. October 26, 28—Greymouth. | October 28—Oamaru. I October 26, 28 or October 26, 30— Auckland. November 2 —Wellington. November 2—lnvercargill. Final Reminder: Owners and trainers are finally re-, minded that acceptances for the first day of the Greytnouth T.C., meeting

to be held on Saturday and Monday next close at 9 o’clock to-night.

Oamaru Bettihg: The committee of the Oamaru Trotting Club has decided to work the totalisator at its spring meeting on the Forbury system—first and second dividends on the win machine and the usual three dividends on the place totalisator.

Ferry Post: Ferry Post was privately timed to do 4.17 3.5 from post to post in the Walter Thompson Handicap. He began slowly and struck trouble from the driverless Smile Again on the way. While having little chance in the last furlong, he was not far away in fifth place at the post.

Train Arrangements: For the Greymouth meeting on Saturday and Monday, a special horse train, with passenger accommodation attached, will leave Christchurch at 8 a.m. on Friday, while a special passenger train will leave at 10.40 p.m., arriving at Greymouth at 5 a.m. on Saturday. A special passenger train will also leave Christchurch on Saturday at 6 a.m.

Due to Reappear: The American-bred trotter Josedale Dictator is due to make his next appearance at the Auckland Meeting, when he will contest the fast-class unhoppled events. This horse is one of the most consistent square-gaiters in commission, and last season he registered three firsts, four seconds, three thirds, and one fourth in 12 starts, to earn £570 in stake-money. Peter’s Find:

Lady Yvonne, the dam of Peter’s Find, was a well-performed mare by Our Thorpe (2.6 1/5), champion miler of his day, and a good performer over all distances, Lady Yvonne was out of Lady Stephney, by Petereta from a Proudchild mare. Lady Yvonne won five races, from a mile to two miles. She was owned by Mr. A. W. Bailey, owner and breeder of Peter’s Find. Certissimus: Should Certissimus appear at Victoria Park on the coming week-end, he will be a great attraction, and one that any club would be delighted to have. The son of Quite Sure is claimed to be the fastest three-year-old trotter to race in the Dominion, and his connections make no secret of the | fact that they expect him to take the i highest honours. He is from Roydon’s I Pride, an American-bred mare by I Arion Guy 1.59 3/4 from Belle Keller i2.7|. Certissimus is owned by Mr. J. IK. Teahen and is trained by , his I breeder D.
