BOXING

WELLINGTON CHAMPIONSHIPS. [per press association.] WELLINGTON, September 22. Because many of last year’s performers had joined the military forces, entries for the 1940 Wellington amateur boxing championships, decided in the Town Hall on Saturday night, were fewer than in other years. The standard was not as high as usual. Not one champion in the senior or junior division was present to defend his title. Nevertheless, there was some prominent talent among the newcomers. The new senior champions are:— Paperweight, P. Oliver; bantamweight, L. Mulholland; light-weight, B. Murphy; welter-weight, B. Fairbrother; middle-weight, J. Imlach; feather-weight, D. Thwaites. GILDO AND RAYNER DRAW. PALMERSTON N., September 22. A fast and willing 12-round contest between Young Gildo and Clarrie Rayner on Saturday resulted in a draw.
