RAILWAY TRAFFIC SUSPENDED.

All railway traffic between occupied and unoccupied France has been suspended, under a German order, without published reason.

MANY EXPLOSIONS.

LONDON, August 20.

For several hours early to-day, loud explosions were heard across the Channel. Sweeping searchlights and shell bursts were also seen in the direction of Boulogne and Calais.

DE GAULLE RECRUITS.

LONDON, August 20.

A group of French officers and men from the French warships that have been demilitarised at Alexandria have joined General de Gaulle, and have announced their willingness to fight anywhere for a free France.

NEW CALEDONIA.

(Reed. August 21, 9 a.m.). CANBERRA, August 20

Replying to an appeal for help from the French colony of Noumea, the Minister of External Affairs (Mr. McEwen), in a statement, declared that Australia was intensely interested in the economic welfare of New Caledonia, and was making arrangements for closer liaison by the despatch of a Government representative. Australia was also considering the request for the establishment of an Australian bank in that colony.
