Three young men went to remarkable lengths and extended considerable energy in what proved a futile attempt to gain free admission to a ball held in the Hastings Assembly Hall. The trio climbed the stairway at the back of the municipal office, climbed on to the roof of the Assembly Hall supper-room, and then crossed over the iron roof of the municipal buildings. They were about to drop down on to the balcony near the Mayor’s room when they were seen by the caretaker. The men beat a hasty retreat and escaped, but one of them must have had an anxious time, for it was noticed that he had his footwear tied round his neck.
