AID TO BRITAIN.

CHICAGO, July 16
Mr W. B. Bankhead, at the last moment, deleted from his speech all reference to aid for Britain. In the amended version of his speech, Mr Bankhead concluded: “I do not know what attitude the convention may take on the subject, but I know it is the attitude of the American people that we will resist to the death any compromise of our democratic principles with those malignant disturbers of world peace—that we will not propose to appease those aggressors.” MR ROOSEVELT’S INTENTIONS. (Recd. July 17, 1.15 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July 16. Mr Roosevelt announced that Mr Barkley would make a statement at the convention at Chicago to-night, on his behalf, regarding his third term intentions.
PROTECTORATE PROPOSED
SANTIAGO (Chile), July 16.
The Foreign Minister, Senor Saenz, disclosed that he has received and is now studying a note from the United States, regarding the establishment of a protectorate over European possessions in Central and South America. •

Informed circles consider the United States is sounding out the Americas on the establishment of a protectorate over European possessions in the Western Hemisphere, as part of the preliminaries to several questions the Havana Conference is likely to consider. The State Department has no knowledge of the formal note sent to Chile, but it is not denied that the United States Ambassador (Mr. Bowers) in Santiago might have presented a memorandum e on the matter.
FLEET MOVEMENT.
(Recd. July 17, 10.40 a.m.). HONOLULU, July 16.
Twelve cruisers and a number of destroyers of the United States battle fleet, left Pearl Harbour. It is speculated whether the ships may be patrolling British and French islands in the south Pacific.
