MEETINGS TO COME

July 20—Waimate' Hunt. July 20 —Manawatu Hunt. July 27— Rangitikei Hunt. July 27—Rotorua and Bay of Plenty. July 27—South Canterbury.

Costly Double: The results of the Victoria Grand National Hurdle Race and Steeplechase last week must have proved costly to the layers of odds, as the respective Winners, Cheery Jack and Blackford, were staunch favourites for some days before the races were decided.

Winning Owners: Jack Tar’s second in the Corunna Hurdles at Trentham on Thursday was worth £7O, and this sum placed Messrs Davis and Nicholson, of. Auckland, at the head of the winning owners’ list with £5040. Previously Mr R z Stewart, owner of Beau Vite, was on top with £5015. Saccone: The Surveyor gelding Saccone gained his first success over hurdles when he won at Trentham on Saturday, and his only other victory this season was achieved in a hack sprint at Ellerslie at New Year. His dam, Adi Vunivola, was bred in Australia, but did most of her racing in Suva, where she was the champion of her day.

Doping Denied: A Brisbane cablegram received last night states that in an interview tc-day, Mr E. C. Harnett, the owner of Beaulivre, denied that he had said, after the Doomben Cup on Saturday, “If the colt had not been got at, he would have walked away with the Newmarket Handicap the previous week.” Mr Harnett added that an investigation after. Beaulivre illness showed that there was neither arsenic or alkaloid poison in' his system. Mr Harnett also denied that the chairman ‘of the Brisbane Amateur Turf Club had apologised for attempted doping, no reference having been made to such an incident.

Harold Young’s Death: The death occurred on Sunday in the Napier Hospital of the ■ wellknown horseman, Harold Young, formerly of Riccarton, but in recent years of Hastings and Gisborne. After serving his apprenticeship with the Fordell trainer, F. Tilley, Young was engaged as first horseman to the Chokebore stable, for which he won many good races. Among his numerous successes for various owners were Ardenvohr and Royal Star in the New Zealand Cup, Pavlova and Nobleman in the Wellington Cup, and Winning Hit in the New Zealand Derby. Young rode on the West Coast on several occasions.

Names: . From the thousands of entries received in the Yearling Names Competition, conducted in Melbourne in aid of the Red Cross Funds, two have been selected by the owners and approved by the of, racehorses. The filly by Liberal from Splice will race as Blissful, while the colt by Manitoba from Queen Consort will be known as Royal Gesture. Two competitors —Miss Roberta Cowan, 143 Grey Street, East Melbourne, and Mrs Ernest Cregan, Quamby Club, Melbourne—submitted Blissful, and they will receive £l2 10/- each. Mr R. O. Shadow Boy:

Trotting

T. Gardyne is working Shadow Boy at Victoria Park. Mr A. Grogan’s gelding has been trained-for all his racing to date by J. Bryce, at Hornby.

Two Horses: J. R. Coburn has two horses in work at’ Victoria Park, Marina Rey“ with which he won a double at Nelson, at Easter, and a three-year-old filly by Worthy Bingen—Always, thus closely related to the champion trotting mare Worthy Queen, 2.3, and 3.5. The youngster, who favours the trotting gait is rather small, but is well set up, and has shaped most promisingly in his first essays. 12 Two-milers:

At the New Zealand Trotting Conference last week, Mr A. L. Matson, on behalf of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club, introduced a remit making it compulsory for all trotting clubs to include in programmes at least one two-mile race each day. It came as something of a surprise to find that there was a good deal of discussion on the subject; but eventually the remit became law. For its meeting, to be held next month, the New Zealand Metropolitan Club has shown its confidence in the new rule, for of the 28 races on its three days’ programme, no fewer than 12 will be run over two miles. On the opening day the Advance Handicap, 4.40 to 4.36 class; Queen Mary Handicap, 4.32 to 4.29 class; August Handicap, 4.28 or better; Trial Handicap, 4.35 to 4.33; and Stewards’ Handicap (unhoppled trotters), 4.38 or better, will cater for the stayers. C. K. Yeatman:

The former Prebbleton trainer, C. K. Yeatman, who has had considerable success on West Coast courses, has set up as a public trainer, at Victoria Park, Greymouth. Yeatman brought four pacers with him, and has since received three others. A three-year-old gelding, Oxford Scholar, (a full brother to Purina), who has not yet started; Because (a six-year-old black gelding by Grattan Loyal—Florence La Badie), who has had several starts without winning; a three-year-old, by Grattan Loyal— Florence La Badie; and a rising two-year-old gelding, by Rey de OroOxford Queen, who is entered for next season’s classics, comprise the team he brought from Prebbleton, and since his arrival, Yeatman has been given Peggy Petrova (Silk Thread —Petrova), a three-year-old filly by Wrack from a Woodland Whispers mare, and a five-year-old full sister to the filly by Frank Worthy. Guy Whispers will be placed in work again by Yeatman, as also will that good mare Purina, who is spelling in Canterbury. Yeatman has also broken in the three-year-old Myosotis —Earthquake gelding owned by Messrs Grogan, Guy and Rothwell, of Greymouth.
