The first meeting of the committee set up at the request of Messrs P. C. Webb, R. Semple and F. Langstone to consider what steps should be taken to provide a workable solution for the present shortage of skilled and unskilled labour in the sawmilling industry, was held yesterday at Greymouth. The members of the committee are: The District Engineer, Public Works Department, chairman (represented by’ Mr R. R. Dawber, Engineer); The Placement Officer, Social Security Department; Mr J. S. Robertson, representative of the employers; and Mr F. Turley, representative of the employees. After a general discussion of the problems involved, it was decided to circularise all the sawmillers in this district to ascertain exactly their labour requirements.
